Week 10 Summaries and Boxes
Friday’s Games
Non-district
BY TYLER CLIFTON
KFYN SPORTS DIRECTOR

DENISON – Move over Batman and Robin, Starsky and Hutch, Butch Cassidy and Sundance, the dynamic duo of Jordan Taylor and D.J. Jones made its presence felt early and often Friday night against rival Sherman during the 111th annual Battle of the Ax at Munson Stadium.

Taylor ran 19 times for 172 yards and three touchdowns, while Jones added 123 yards on 21 carries, as the Yellow Jackets kept the Ax for the third straight season with a 43-28 victory.

Denison now turns its attention to Richardson Pearce, as the teams square off at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Pizza Hut Park in the Class 4A Division II bi-district round.

Taylor also completed 13 of 15 passes for 159 yards and a touchdown, continuing a solid three-game stretch against rival Sherman that began two years ago when he orchestrated a 20-point fourth-quarter comeback at Bearcat Stadium.

The Yellow Jackets made the defensive stops when they needed to in crunch time and now turn their focus on the Mustangs and finding a way to make another lengthy post-season run.

“Our defense has played well all year long, and it showed tonight,” said Denison coach Cody White, who is now 3-0 in the Battle of the Ax. “They have an outstanding quarterback and solid receivers, and it was all about hanging in there. Our front four particularly got the job done.”

Zac Whitfield ran 18 times for 129 yards and two touchdowns for the Bearcats (8-2, 6-1), but Denison’s defense accomplished its goal of  holding Madison Carter to 22 yards on 13 carries.

Sherman’s senior quarterback did complete 13 of 21 passes for 188 yards and two fourth-quarter touchdowns, but the damage had already been done.

“He’s a good quarterback and can hurt you in so many ways,” Denison senior defensive tackle Devonte Kemp said. “He made some good throws, but it was all about containing him on the run. With all due respect to him, we had the mindset of cutting the head off the snake. We knew if we could find a way to stop him, we could win the game, and now it remains one game at a time.”

The Bearcats have to regroup and focus on their Class 4A Division I bi-district round game against Carrollton Newman Smith slated for 7:30 p.m. Friday at Plano’s Clark Stadium.

Whitfield scored from three yards out midway through the third quarter on a drive set up by his earlier 23-yard run as well as a Denison pass-interference call on fourth down.

The Bearcat defense held the Yellow Jackets on a third-down play to force a punt and potentially pull within eight points. A penalty flag was thrown on Sherman coach Gary Kinne for impeding the path of the referee and giving District 9-4A champ Denison (9-1, 7-0) new life.

Taylor eventually responded with a 25-yard touchdown run.

“No one touched an official, but he threw a flag, because he said we were in his area,” Kinne said. “Who knows what might have happened after that, but Denison is a good football team that did a better job of coaching and playing tonight than we did. Our hats are off to them.”

Jones added a 17-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter, while Carter did his best to try and bring Sherman back with late touchdowns to Geoff Hooker (10 yards) and John Welborn (four). The Bearcats recovered an onside kick, but Denison was given the ball after a Sherman player touched it before the required 10 yards.

There was one final chance with 1:55 to play, but Aaron Morrison’s jarring hit on Hooker forced a fumble, and the Yellow Jackets recovered. It was time to celebrate from there.

One area of concern for Denison is 140 yards worth of penalties and the ejection of a second player in as many weeks after Reeves was thrown out of the game for punching an opponent.

“It’s exciting to win three in a row and have two straight district championships,” Jones said. “Our offensive line did such a great job tonight, because they kept blitzing every snap, and our guys were able to pick them up every time.”

Cody Reeves had a 25-yard touchdown run on a reverse reduced to eight yards after a holding penalty, but he got open in the corner of the end zone on the next play and corralled a 27-yard touchdown pass from Taylor in the corner of the end zone for the first quarter’s only points.

Sherman was on the verge of tying the game, but Hayden Chapman recovered a fumble after Carter was hit in the process of trying to pitch to Whitfield.

The Yellow Jackets didn’t take advantage initially, but the field position quickly swung in their favor after Dalton Hestand’s 79-yard punt that took a gratuitous bounce on the field turf.

Denison took over at midfield on its next possession, and Taylor’s 10-yard pass to Kyle Galyon set up Jones’ 30-yard touchdown run on third down.

“We were inches away from putting the ball in the end zone,” Kinne said. “The 14-point swing was big, because our defense had just done a good job of stopping them.”

Whitfield got Sherman on the board with a 1-yard run, as the Bearcats used six straight running plays after Nathan James set up the drive with a 44-yard kickoff return.

The Yellow Jackets went out and proved whatever Sherman could do, they could do better with an identical six-play drive (all on runs) ending with Taylor’s 8-yard touchdown run.

Morrison had a key sack of Carter, and Denison had 51 seconds to come away with at least a field goal. Taylor threw passes of 34 yards to Galyon and 19 to Jones to set up his 5-yard touchdown run for a 22-point second quarter and 29-7 halftime lead.

Taylor had 100 yards on 12 carries in the first half alone.

The Yellow Jackets, particularly the seniors, know the real season begins now.

“It feels good to win three of these games in a row, but we have to get down to business, because it’s all about now,” Taylor said. “We just beat a great football team, and we can be all right if we can eliminate the penalties. We can’t afford to have so many personal fouls in the playoffs.”

Sherman now wants to avoid the same two-game swoon it suffered last season after not seeming to get past its loss to the Yellow Jackets and losing in the bi-district round to Pearce. Kinne talked about the importance of getting back into the groove mentally this week in practice.

“We have a lot of seniors who know there is no next time,” Kinne said. “We can’t afford to let Denison beat us twice.”

Hill also threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Smith for a 14-7 lead, but the Lions scored the game’s final 28 points.

District 10-3A

Anna 10, Bonham 0

BONHAM – The visiting Coyotes posted their second shutout in as many weeks to end their 2009 season on a high note and won four times as many games as they did all of last season.

The teams were just about even in total yardage, with the Coyotes (4-6, 2-3) slightly out-gaining Bonham (0-10, 0-5), 194-186, but three lost fumbles didn’t help the Warriors’ cause.

Matt Williams was held to a modest 41 yards on 28 carries and the game’s only touchdown.

Tyler Elliott completed four of six passes for 158 yards, including a 44-yard pass to Williams.

Manuel Martinez caught two passes for 84 yards and also kicked a 31-yard field goal.

VAN ALSTYNE – Orion Thomas ran 27 times for 147 yards and a touchdown, and the host Panthers (10-0, 5-0) reversed their fortunes from a year ago to win the District 10-3A championship.

Tyrell Smith had 94 yards on 13 carries and two touchdowns for the Wildcats (6-4, 4-1), including a 2-yard scoring run in the third quarter to tie the game 14-14. Paris plays at 7:30 p.m. Thursday against Argyle in a re-match of last week’s bi-district round at McKinney’s Ron Poe Stadium.

Jordan Barnes responded with a 14-yard touchdown run, and Chris Burge threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Solomon Biscarro for the game’s deciding points.

Corban Taylor threw a 36-yard scoring pass to Tavairus Williams, but Paris failed to score during its final two possessions. The Paris sophomore was eight of 23 for 140 yards, and Williams caught four passes for 123 yards in the loss.

Smith gave the Wildcats their only lead of the game on a 1-yard touchdown run before being answered by counterpart Burge on a 4-yard run.

Thomas’ 1-yard touchdown in the second quarter put Van Alstyne in front 14-7 at the half.

The Panthers also have a re-match on their hands at 7:30 p.m. Friday against Celina at Little Elm’s Lobo Stadium. It can be heard on kfyn1420.com.

North Lamar 26, Commerce 25

COMMERCE – Both teams played as if the district’s final playoff berth was on the line, and North Lamar won after stopping a Tiger two-point conversion attempt in the waning seconds.

Dakota Boles out-dueled sophomore Jurace Brown at running back with 146 yards on 29 carries, while Brown ran 20 times for 108 yards. Both scored three touchdowns.

Commerce also got 163 yards from quarterback Terrence Walker on 12 of 18 passing.

The Panthers (3-7, 3-2 District 10-3A) would’ve advanced regardless due to Anna’s road win at Bonham, but they enter the Division I playoffs on a high note entering their re-match against defending state champion Prosper on Friday at Rockwall’s Wilkerson-Sanders Stadium.

The Tigers (1-9, 1-4) tied the game 13-13 midway through the third quarter on Walker’s 1-yard touchdown run, but Boles answered from five yards out to put North Lamar back up by seven.

Brown had a 12-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter, but Boles was too much to handle and added a 15-yard touchdown run.

North Lamar’s defense had just enough in the end, holding Brown out of the end zone after he scored from four yards out to again pull within a point.

The Panthers scored the first 14 points on Ryan White’s 59-yard touchdown pass to T.J. Shirley and Boles’ 3-yard scoring run in the second quarter.

Walker threw a 41-yard touchdown pass to Brown to pull the Tigers within seven at the half.

WHITESBORO – Sanger scored three touchdowns in as many minutes in the first quarter.

Dane Evans threw four touchdown passes to lead the way for the Indians (5-5, 2-3), who picked up the win at Bearcat Stadium but fell just short of a playoff berth for the second time in as many seasons.

Bo Bob Howard’s 72-yard run set up Hayden Thomas’ 1-yard touchdown run, and Dane Evans threw a pass to Jay Cain to set up Nathan Rotter’s 1-yard touchdown for a 14-point Sanger advantage.

Howard added a 27-yard touchdown run, and Evans threw his second touchdown, a 53-yarder to Ryan Scott, to complete a run of 28 straight points.

Jerrid Caffey caught a 65-yard scoring pass from Jordan Gill to leave the Bearcats (2-8, 0-5) down 35-14 at the half.

Caffey continued his productive game with a pair of third-quarter scoring runs from 30 and four yards out.

There was plenty of scoring in the second half, but the defenses did make themselves felt from time to time.

Thomas had a productive evening on both sides of the ball and returned a blocked extra-point attempt the other way for a two-point play.

Whitesboro recorded a safety in the fourth quarter, and Caffey eventually scored on his second touchdown reception of the game from 18 yards out.

Evans threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Rotter, but Gill responded with a 1-yard scoring run to briefly tie the game 7-7 in the first quarter.

Sanger responded with three touchdowns in as many minutes to put the game in its favor.

Argyle 29, Celina 14

ARGYLE – The defenses fought tooth and nail throughout, but the Class 3A fifth-ranked Eagles were too much to handle in the second half.

Cody Worrell’s 110 total yards were the most for a player from any team, but Argyle (10-0, 5-0) held the Bobcats (6-4, 3-2) to two touchdowns.

Austin Aune threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Sweatt, and Dran Crenshaw scored from four yards out for a 23-6 lead.

Worrell threw a 32-yard touchdown pass to Justin Brumfield and a two-point pass to Chad Hawley to bring Celina within nine, but the two-possession deficit was too much to overcome, and Kevin Ryan added a 30-yard touchdown run for insurance.

The running games were pretty equal for each team (80 yards for Celina, 78 for Argyle), and the Bobcats actually out-gained the Eagles 174-131.

Jamarick Simmons and Jose Romero were held to a combined 53 yards on 10 carries, as the defenses proved early and often they were going to control the game early.

Celina fumbled three times, including on in the end zone Argyle’s Alejandro Castro recovered for a touchdown.

Chad Hedlund kicked a 47-yard field goal, and Simmons got the Bobcats on the board with a 32-yard touchdown run and 10-6 deficit that stretched into halftime.

The Eagles play Paris in a rematch of the bi-district round Thursday in McKinney.

PILOT POINT – Jarman Johnson ran 28 times for 247 yards and three touchdowns, as the host Bearcats scored the game’s first 28 points and never looked back to capture the District 10-2A title in a game pitting two undefeated teams.

Seth Tilley added 110 yards on 13 carries for the state-ranked Bearcats (10-0, 5-0), who begin their state championship quest at 7:30 p.m. Friday against Boyd at Springtown’s Porcupine Stadium in an attempt to better their state semifinal appearance of a year ago in which it lost to Muleshoe.

Aubrey (9-1, 4-1) broke the shut-out bid in the second quarter on a 1-yard touchdown run by Billy Feathers, who had 23 carries for 128 yards. Johnson scored on a 19-yard run in the third quarter, and James Wurster added a 3-yard touchdown run for the Chaparrals, who play at 7:30 p.m. Thursday against Millsap, also at Springtown.

Johnson had a 61-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and a 13-yarder in the second. Tilley had a 40-yard scoring run of his own and threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Mason Guthrie for a 28-7 halftime lead. The Bearcats took advantage of four Aubrey interceptions.

Both teams had 41 carries, but Pilot Point had more than twice as many yards (357 to 151), with Johnson and Tilley accounting for all of the yards.

The Bearcats out-gained Aubrey 414-184 overall.

Melissa 31, Howe 28

MELISSA – Aaron Bush’s 34-yard touchdown run put the host Cardinals to stay, and Howe fell just short of an end-of-the-year upset.

Cody Morgan ran 20 times for 108 yards and a touchdown, while sophomore quarterback Wes McQueen completed 15 of 23 passes for 193 yards and a score, as the Cardinals prepare for their 7:30 p.m. bi-district game this week against Prairiland at Garland’s Homer B. Johnson Stadium.

Nathan Warren had a 16-yard touchdown run and a 66-yard scoring reception, as Melissa (8-2, 6-1) jumped out to a 14-0 first-quarter lead.

Chase Fountaine, who was 15 of 24 for 207 yards and three touchdowns (all to Alex Torres), including a 17-yarder in the second quarter. Conner Monroe responded with a 42-yard field goal for a 17-7 lead at the break.

Morgan’s 16-yard touchdown run put the Cardinals up by 17, and it seemed to be smooth sailing until Bronco Wildman returned a fumble 80 yards for a touchdown, and Fountaine found Torres (six receptions, 136 yards) from 27 yards out to whittle the Bulldogs’ deficit to four before Bush scored the eventual game winner.

Fountaine added a 63-yard touchdown pass to Torres, but Howe (4-6, 2-5) ran out of time.

Tom Bean 27, Bells 20

TOM BEAN – Hunter Hendry scored on a 21-yard run in the fourth quarter to break a tie and give the Tomcats their first district win of the year and a victory to carry into what they hope is an improved 2010 season.

Hendry accounted for almost 300 yards of total offense for Tom Bean (2-8, 1-6), which was one year removed from competing in the state playoffs. He ran 32 times for 165 yards and three touchdowns and also completed 11 of 14 passes for 133 yards and a touchdown.

Jake Trentman caught two passes for 61 yards and a touchdown, while Rex Roberts added 57 yards on three receptions.

Kolby Milner ran 19 times for 102 yards, including a 3-yard score in the third quarter to pull within two. Bud Pedigo’s two-point pass to Max Morris tied the game 20-20. Pedigo completed 11 of 25 passes for 127 yards.

Hendry scored the game winner in the fourth quarter to send the Panthers to their third straight loss to end the season after a 3-1 start in district play.

Hendry threw a 41-yard touchdown pass to Jake Trentman, had a 12-yard touchdown run and added a two-point run for good measure to give Tom Bean a 14-0 first-quarter lead.

Bells’ defense tightened up in the second quarter, and Pate Pritchard returned an interception eight yards for a touchdown. Milner added a 5-yard scoring run to pull the Panthers within two until Hendry increased the Tomcats’ advantage to 20-12 at the half with a 2-yard touchdown run.

District 12-2A

Paul Pewitt 44, Prairiland 22

OMAHA – Both teams have entered this game undefeated in district play, and the Brahmas (8-2, 7-0) have come out the winner both times and were led this time by three 100-yard rushers.

Jordan McFarland (156 yards on 12 carries) extended an already-healthy lead to 29 after a 93-yard touchdown run at the end of the third quarter.

Payne Schuelke tried to keep the Patriots (9-1, 6-1) in the game with an 18-yard touchdown pass to Tanner Connot (eight receptions, 84 yards), but Paul Pewitt was too much to overcome.

Jacob Morton, who ran 11 times for 109 yards and three touchdowns exchanged 60-yard touchdown runs with Prairiland’s Randal Sessums (25 carries, 213 yards).

Morton kicked a 34-yard field goal in the first quarter and scored on a 21-yard run in the second.

Schuelke threw the first of his two touchdown passes, a 49-yarder to Todd Fendley, to keep the Patriots in the game early, but Paul Pewitt had touchdown runs of 39 and three yards by Jerry Braddock (19 carries, 113 yards) and a 26-yarder by Morton for a 30-8 halftime lead.

Paul Pewitt opens the playoffs at 7:30 p.m. Saturday against Leonard at Royse City, while Prairiland plays Melissa at 7:30 p.m. Friday on a game being aired by KFYN 1420 AM.

Redwater 21, Chisum 18

PARIS – Dewey Fleming scored from a yard out with less than a minute remaining in the game to lift the visiting Dragons (6-4, 4-3) past Chisum on Friday.

The run spoiled quite a finale by Mustang quarterback Jeremy Eddington, who ran 22 times for 204 yards and three second-half touchdowns that turned a 14-0 deficit into a four-point lead before Fleming scored his game winner.

It was the final game played at Noyes Stadium after the Mustangs had to move the game to the former home of Paris High after soggy field conditions.

It should make for quite an interesting trivia question in the years to come, as the Oct. 30 game between Bonham and Paris was supposed to be the stadium’s finale.

Redwater took a 14-0 lead on Fleming’s 2-yard touchdown run and Hunter Flood’s 27-yard scoring pass to Cole Yeldell.

The defenses stood strong in the second quarter and didn’t allow a point for a 14-0 Dragon lead at the break.

Brian Glover added 65 yards on 12 carries for the Mustangs (6-4, 3-4) in his final game wearing a Chisum uniform.

Four different Chisum receivers had receptions, but the game resulted in a loss despite out-gaining the Dragons 316-243, including 269-116 on the ground.

One key difference was in the passing department, as Flood was eight of 11 for 127 yards, while Eddington was held to 47 yards on four of 14 passing with an interception.

Fleming finished with 66 yards.

Clarksville 39, DeKalb 0

DeKALB – H.B. Rosser ran 14 times for 124 yards and a touchdown, while Gary Moore caught three passes for 97 yards and a score, as the visiting Tigers ended their 2009 season on a high note with the shutout win.

Jarold McPherson made the most of his one carry with a 15-yard third-quarter touchdown to increase Clarksville’s advantage to 27-0.

Rosser had his second touchdown pass of the game, a 22-yarder to Moore, and Radonte Edwards added a 38-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter for the final margin.

Edwards ran 11 times for 78 yards, and Quan Bell added 58 yards on six carries and a touchdown for the Tigers (4-6, 2-5).

McPherson, Trea O’Neal and Devonte Shavers each had interceptions to help Clarksville’s cause, as DeKalb was held to only 62 yards of offense, including minus-16 yards on 35 carries.

The Tigers finished with 436 yards of total offense and ran a combined 36 times for 302 yards in the win. Clarksville could’ve possibly instilled more damage to the Bears (0-10, 0-7) had it not been for two lost fumbles.

Moore caught a 27-yard touchdown pass from Rosser at the end of the third quarter.

Rosser, a sophomore, found a crease and scored on a 67-yard run midway through the second quarter. Bell added his 35-yard touchdown run for a 20-0 Tiger lead at the half.
