ROYSE CITY – Leonard and Paul Pewitt entered Bulldog Stadium on Saturday night intent on running the football and running it often, and it was all going to come down to which defense was able to stop the other and which team made fewer mistakes.

The Tigers were making their first playoff appearance since 1998, and although Paul Pewitt had the experience, the Brahmas had to hold off Leonard in the second half to escape with a 21-14 victory in Class 2A Division II Region II action.

Brahma quarterback Jordan McFarland intercepted the Tigers’ final pass of the game at the 12 yard line to end the game after Leonard forced and recovered a pair of fumbles and held Paul Pewitt scoreless in the second half.

The Brahmas (9-2) now return to town for an area-round game against Aubrey (10-1) at 7:30 p.m. Saturday night. The Chaparrals defeated Millsap 34-7 on Thursday in bi-district play at Springtown’s Porcupine Stadium.

Paul Pewitt ran on all 62 of its plays to the tune of 266 yards, including 145 yards on 34 carries and a touchdown by fullback Jerry Braddock.

Leonard did force Braddock to fumble near the eight-minute mark of the third quarter, and Tiger defensive end T.R. Hodnett recovered to save the game, as the deficit was already 21-8.

Matt Williams held on to the ball despite a big hit for a 13-yard reception from backup quarterback Jake Buchanan, but Leonard couldn’t get any further than midfield and was forced to punt.

The defense did come through once again on the first play of the fourth quarter, after tackle Sam Whisenhunt fell on a Jacob Morton fumble.

Reggie Robinson scored from the one 10 plays later on a drive he set up with 11 and 13-yard runs as well as an eight-yard pass from Buchanan to T.J. Stahley for a 21-14 score.

The Tigers forced punts on their final two possessions but were unable to find the end zone, and Cowan’s final pass was intercepted to end the game.

Paul Pewitt drove to the Tiger 19 on its opening possession of the game but faced fourth down. The Brahmas faked a play up the middle, with McFarland handing off to speedy back Sedrick Johnson, who ran 19 yards around left end for a touchdown.

Leonard wasted no time with its equalizer, as Reggie Robinson followed Tevin Daniels’ 10-yard run with a 59-yard touchdown run and finished with a game-high 158 yards on 20 carries.

The two-point attempt failed, leaving the Tigers down 8-6 after the first eight minutes.

Morton had a 40-yard run, and McFarland added a 12-yard scamper on fourth down to set up Johnson’s second touchdown from six yards out and a 14-8 advantage.

Leonard forced punts on the Brahmas’ next two possessions, and the snap on the second went over Morton’s head, and it was a race against Robinson for the loose ball.

Morton wisely kicked it out of the end zone, giving the Tigers two points instead of a touchdown to whittle the deficit to six with 4:02 left in the first half.

In a déjà vu moment, one which changed the course of the game completely in Paul Pewitt’s favor, a fourth-down snap went over the head of Tiger punter Aaron Shanks.

Like Morton before, he made a smart play and threw the ball out of bounds for an incomplete pass.

It did provide a drastic change in field position, and the Brahmas used the hot hand of Braddock, who ran four straight times for 46 yards and scored from six yards out with 34 seconds left for a 21-8 halftime lead.

Class 3A Region II

Celina 35, Van Alstyne 14

LITTLE ELM – Celina didn’t want to make its earliest playoff exit in recent memory, and Van Alstyne wanted to build on its undefeated regular season and District 10-3A championship.

The Panthers had several chances of getting into the end zone but couldn’t take advantage, and the Bobcats used a pair of big offensive plays and seven sacks from its defense to capture a 35-14 win on Friday at the Little Elm Athletic Complex.

Celina led 21-7 entering the third quarter, when Van Alstyne mounted a nine-play, 92-yard drive aided by a pair of Chris Burge passes to Tanner Neill (28 yards) and Chance Grayson (40) deep inside Bobcat territory. Unlike their previous two trips inside the 10, the Panthers came away with points after Burge’s 6-yard touchdown pass to a diving Grayson.

Celina had an answer, using just more than six minutes for a 13-play scoring drive, with Worrell running 15 yards on a 4th-and-10 play to move the chains. He ran 15 times for 66 yards in the game and completed six of 10 passes for 157 more yards.

Jamarick Simmons eventually scored from a yard out on third down.

Worrell converted another big third-down play early in the fourth quarter with a 15-yard pass down the middle to Cody Rhodes, and Jose Romero capped the drive with a 22-yard touchdown run. Caleb Lavey tipped and corralled a Burge pass for an interception and the final margin.

Romero ran nine times for 91 yards to go past 1,000 yards rushing for the season. Cody Sandler finished with 90 all-purpose yards.

Burge went past the 2,000-yard passing plateau, the second time in as many seasons a Van Alstyne quarterback accomplished the feat after Josh Willingham did the same last season. Burge finished 12 of 23 for 190 yards and two touchdowns.

Neill finished with 85 yards on five receptions, Orion Thomas was held to 28 yards on 11 carries and Solomon Biscarro had only one 22-yard reception.

The Panthers recovered what amounted to an onside kick to start the game but couldn’t convert on fourth down after moving to the Bobcat 6. Celina responded with a 10-play, 94-yard drive in less than four minutes aided by an early pass-interference penalty on Van Alstyne.

Worrell completed a pair of passes to Sandler, a 20-yarder inside the 10 and a 3-yard touchdown toss. The snap was high on the extra-point attempt, with the kick going wide for a 6-0 lead.

Van Alstyne used 15 plays to again move inside the 10 after Biscarro’s 22-yard reception, and Burge’s 11-yard run on fourth down, but a second fourth-down attempt was no good.

Biscarro intercepted Worrell, but the Panthers again couldn’t take advantage, and Celina scored three plays later on a 76-yard pass-and-run from Worrell to Romero for a 14-0 lead.

The Panthers finally responded late in the half on Burge’s 16-yard touchdown pass to Grayson. A personal-foul penalty on third down kept the drive alive as well as Thomas’ 10-yard run.

Daniel Mendoza gave Celina a mental boost after returning the ensuing kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown, and the Bobcats fell just shy of the end zone on their final drive of the half after sacking Burge twice and getting the ball back with 56 seconds remaining.

Class 2A Division II

Melissa 7, Prairiland 6

GARLAND– Rodney Reed stopped Prairiland short of the end zone on a two-point pass attempt to hold on for the 1-point win on Friday at Homer B. Johnson Stadium.

The Cardinals (9-2) play Callisburg in this week’s area round at 7:30 p.m. this Saturday at the Little Elm Athletic Complex after the Wildcats defeated Jacksboro on Saturday.

Sophomore quarterback Wes McQueen completed five of eight passes for 85 yards, and Nick Palmer ran six times for 11 yards and a 1-yard touchdown for a 7-0 lead in the third quarter after both teams entered with a scoreless first half.

The score capped a seven-play, 45-yard drive aided by McQueen’s timely pass to Brandon Hunter.

Randal Sessums, Prairiland’s all-time rushing leader, ran 28 times for 112 yards in the loss for the Patriots (9-2), who won nine straight only to lose their final two games for the second time in as many seasons.

Todd Fendley caught a five-yard touchdown pass from running back Justin Harris for Prairiland’s only score.

Sessums bulled his way toward the end zone after catching a shovel pass but was stopped short by Reed.

The game was delayed nearly a half hour after Patriot quarterback Payne Schuelke, son of Prairiland head coach Glen Schuelke, broke his ankle and fibula playing defense and left the stadium on an ambulance.

Schuelke had to be replaced by receiver Tanner Connot who did have experience behind center earlier in the season and had to play after the team’s backup quarterback Zach McLamore wasn’t even dressed out because of his own injury after a concussion he suffered a week earlier against Paul Pewitt.
