LITTLE ELM – Most have heard of the old adage about there being no “I” in team, but it was hard not to notice the significant impact one single Callisburg player had during the Wildcats’ area-round game against Melissa on Saturday night.

Bobby Dorman plays every single play on offense, defense and special teams, and he accounted for every Callisburg point, including his decisive touchdown run from seven yards out with 40 seconds left in the game to lift the Wildcats to a 24-21 win against the Cardinals at the Little Elm Athletic Complex.

Callisburg (10-2) advances to play Caddo Mills in the regional round this week at a time, date and site to be determined.

Dorman ran 27 times for 138 yards and three touchdowns and completed 11 of 19 passes for 117 yards more with his only blemish being an interception.

Melissa (9-3) led from the midway mark of the second quarter until the end of the game but was unable to hold onto its lead in the waning moments.

The second half opened with four consecutive punts, and the Cardinals were lining up for a fifth straight before attempting a fake punt, but Aaron Bush’s pass was incomplete.

The game’s Most Valuable Player made his mark defensively, with Dorman intercepting sophomore counterpart Wes McQueen, and a pair of double-digit runs by Langston Jones set up Dorman’s 1-yard touchdown run for a 17-14 Wildcat lead.

Melissa answered with a 7-play scoring drive of its own, set up by McQueen’s 60-yard pass to Nathan Warren as well as a Callisburg holding penalty on third down.

McQueen completed a 12-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Hunter to put the Cardinals back up by four.

The key play of the game came midway through what would be the Wildcats’ game-winning drive on a 29-yard pass from Dorman to Kevin Bartley.

Dorman completed another pass to Bartley, who finished with 10 catches for 105 yards, for 10 yards, and found his way into the end zone for the win one play later.

Cole Wescoat intercepted McQueen to end the game, as the Melissa quarterback completed nine of 16 passes for 159 yards but was picked off twice.

Cody Morgan intercepted Dorman midway through the first quarter, but the Cardinals immediately fumbled the ball back. Dorman capped a six-play drive (all on runs) with a 4-yard touchdown.

Nick Palmer answered for Melissa with a 2-yard touchdown run set up by Hunter’s 23-yard run on third down and McQueen’s 34-yard pass to Brodie Russell.

Palmer ended an 11-play drive in the second quarter with a 1-yard scoring run on fourth and goal. A pass-interference penalty on third down kept the drive alive, while an 18-yard run by Morgan, another flag on a personal foul and John Young’s 7-yard run set up the Cardinal touchdown.

Callisburg had a 17-play drive fall short of the end zone before the half, but a potential interception was dropped, allowing Dorman to kick a 30-yard field goal to pull the Wildcats within 14-10 at the break instead of down 14-7.

The three points proved to be the difference in the game, with a potential overtime had the interception been made.

Morgan led the Cardinals on the ground with 62 yards on 18 carries, while Jones added 68 yards on 13 carries for Callisburg.

Pilot Point 28, Gunter 14

FRISCO – Seth Tilley ran 22 times for 164 yards and scored a late touchdown from 15 yards out to lift the Bearcats (12-0) to victory in a matchup of unbeaten teams.

Jarman Johnson added 116 yards on 18 carries for Pilot Point, which faces Godley this week in the regional finals at a time, date and site to be determined.

Chad Tucker ran 25 times for 108 yards and had a touchdown rushing and receiving for the Tigers (11-1), as he broke the school’s single-season rushing mark by a single yard.

Nicky Mixon added 86 yards on 16 carries for Gunter, but it was Tucker who seemed to have extended a late fourth-quarter drive on fourth down with the Tigers down 14-7.

A questionable spot turned the ball over on downs, and Johnson scored three plays later on a 33-yard run on a drive set up by Tilley’s 28-yard scamper.

Gunter responded with Richard Young’s 16-yard touchdown pass to Tucker, but Tilley took the load on his shoulders and ran five straight times, including a key 15-yarder on 3rd-and-14 to preserve the win.

J.P. Price scored on a nine-yard end around for a 7-0 Bearcat lead after Tilley’s 15-yard pass to Colin Noe set Pilot Point up inside the Tiger 10. Gunter responded with an 11-play scoring drive (all on runs) capped by Tucker’s 2-yard run.

Johnson scored a little more than two minutes into the second quarter on a 4-yard run set up by Tilley’s 18-yard pass to Tyler McNairy on a 4th-and-5 play.

Gunter sacked Tilley just before the half to enter the break down by only seven.

Pilot Point tried to put the game away in the third quarter after reaching the Tiger 18, but Colton Hinson, who played his first game in more than a month after returning from a broken collarbone he suffered against Melissa, intercepted a Tilley pass.

Willie Davis picked off Young on Gunter’s ensuing drive and just missed another on a halfback pass by Tucker later in the game.

Tucker ran 22 yards and had 15 more tacked on with a facemask penalty.

The Tigers converted two earlier fourth-down plays (three in the second half alone), but it was the one Tucker seemed to get that was placed short of the mark that turned the game in Pilot Point’s favor.

ROYSE CITY – Earlier in the day at Royse City’s Bulldog Stadium, Sam Gagliano ran 30 yards for the deciding touchdown, as the third-ranked Indians (12-0) defeated the Tigers.

Gagliano ran 10 times for 56 yards, and Jamison Sterns led the Waxahachie ground game with 125 yards on 12 carries and two scores.

The Indians play Highland Park (11-1) in this week’s regional semifinals.

Texas High (7-4) tied the game 14-14 in the third quarter on Kody Sutton’s 13-yard touchdown run. Sutton finished with 104 yards on 25 carries. The Tigers were driving for the lead when quarterback Nathan Sorenson, who has committed to Oklahoma State, had his pass tipped, intercepted and returned 91 yards for a touchdown by Devin Chandler.

Sorenson kept Texas High within a touchdown after a 16-yard scoring run, but Gagliano put the finishing touches on the win. Sorenson completed 15 of 30 passes for 200 yards but didn’t throw a touchdown.

Gagliano and Jamison Sterns put the Indians up 14-0 on touchdown runs of one and three yards, respectively, after a scoreless first quarter.

The Tigers avoided disaster after John Michael McGee recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown to leave Texas High down only 14-7 at the half.

LaJordan Easley ran seven times for 48 yards, and Waxahachie also got three carries and 30 yards each from Jacob Benavides and Venique Benton.

Kennedale 10, Celina 6

JUSTIN - Defense and special teams proved to be the difference, as Lorenzo Fouts returned a punt 55 yards for a touchdown, as Kennedale (11-1) knocked Celina out of the playoffs and snapped the Bobcats' string of consecutive 10-win seasons at 15.

Celina (7-5) fell one 10-win season shy of Corpus Christi Calallen's state mark and lost despite giving up only 69 yards of offense, all on the ground.

The Bobcats had a late 1-yard touchdown run by Daniel Mendoza, and Caleb Lavey recovered a fumble, but Celina fumbled the ball back to end the threat in a game played at Justin Northwest.

Leading rusher Jose Romero was lost to an ankle injury in the second quarter and didn't return, with backup Cody Sandler taking over and rushing 18 times for 72 yards.

Fouts intercepted a Cody Worrell pass and returned it 60 yards to set up Zane Guadagnolo's 36-yard field goal for an early 3-0 lead.

Kennedale advances to play the Pittsburg Pirates (10-1) in this week's Region II semifinals.
