Week 4 Summaries and Boxes
Friday’s Games

KFYN SPORTS DIRECTOR
NEVADA – It was a situation which
many teams, particularly ones who have yet to win a game, would have called it
a night, but not the Bonham Purple Warriors.
Tay Davis made a one-handed grab of a tipped pass and
returned it 67 yards to give host Nevada Community a 27-7 lead on homecoming
night. The visiting Warriors refused to wilt under the pressure, pulled within
six on two occasions in the second half but couldn’t overcome the deficit in an
eventual 49-34 loss.
Collin Strahan ran 14 times for 185 yards and three
touchdowns to lead the Braves (3-2) and also completed 10 of 18 passes for 158
yards and two more scores. Tim Underwood ran 18 times for 93 yards and a
touchdown, while Keondre Jermany
added 91 yards on eight carries and a score.
Bonham (0-5) faced a 20-point deficit and was forced to punt after the
interception on its opening possession of the second quarter. The Braves (2-3)
faced fourth-and-1 at the Warrior 11, when the defense held Strahan
short of the mark and negated a 15-play drive.
The stop ignited the offense, as it went 69 yards the other way. Daine Dunlap covered the final 20, after the offensive line
allowed Kyle Washington time to roll around in the pocket and found Dunlap in
the end zone after he separated from his defender.
The 20-yard touchdown pass drew the Purple Warriors within 12 points at the
half.
Washington scored from 12 yards out midway through the third quarter, leaving
Bonham down 27-21 with 6:28 left in the game.
Despite some flashes of solid play throughout, one area of concern was the
defense’s knack for giving up the big play, and Strahan
found a crease for a 54-yard touchdown run and ran in the two-point conversion
to put Nevada Community back up by 14.
Bonham faced a fourth-and-long situation on the Braves’ 27, but Washington and
Dunlap hooked up again to pull the Warriors within six points for the second
time.
They were unable to hold Nevada Community in check, and Paul Blasingame caught Strahan’s short
pass, eluded several would-be-tacklers and scored from 54 yards out to allow
the Braves to pull away.
The teams traded touchdowns in the fourth quarter, with Strahan’s
20-yard scoring pass to Underwood and Washington’s 29-yarder to Jake Wilson,
who made a leaping grab of a high pass on his way to the end zone.
Washington completed 17 of 38 pass attempts for 182 yards and four touchdowns
and ran 18 times for 210 more yards and the other score. Dunlap finished with
82 yards on six receptions. Jeremy Smith came on strong in the second half and
wound up with 57 yards on eight carries, while Dalton Cagle added a 50-yard
reception.
Jermany had 67 yards rushing on his first two
carries, including a 39-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Strahan scored a little more than two minutes later from 48
yards out for a 13-0 lead. Washington answered with a 31-yard touchdown pass to
Cagle on third down, but Strahan found another crease
up the middle near the end of the first quarter for a 17-yard touchdown and
19-7 advantage.
The Warriors’ special teams had a productive night, particularly on the kickoff
team, with four returns of at least 20 yards to give Bonham favorable field
position.

Van Alstyne - Chris Burge completed 15 of 23 passes
for 283 yards and five touchdowns to four different receivers, as Van Alstyne (5-0) swept its non-district schedule.
Chance Grayson caught three passes for 75 yards and two touchdowns, while
Tanner Neill had 125 yards on five receptions and a 76-yard scoring catch.
Solomon Biscarro and Brandon Dalton also had
touchdowns in the air for the Panthers.
Van Alstyne was also one yard shy of 100 on the
ground with its running-back-by-committee approach, as Burge scored from two
yards out to send the Panthers into halftime ahead
28-7.
The defense did its part as well, holding Bowie to 179 yards of total offense.
Tim Metts was 16 of 29 for 134 yards and a touchdown
and also caught a scoring pass from Tyler Price.
The difference was Van Alstyne’s pressure that led to
four interceptions.

Lovejoy

ANNA - Michael Means and Blake Martin each
ran for two touchdowns, as Lovejoy (5-0) enters district play in two weeks with
an undefeated record in only its second season of existence.
Means also completed 10 of 15 passes for 169 yards and a 50-yard touchdown pass
to Parker Norris in the second quarter that gave the Leopards a 35-7 lead after
Anna had briefly tied the score in the first quarter on Tyler Elliott’s 69-yard
touchdown pass to Mark Jackson.
Martin, who ran seven times for 68 yards, ended any threat with touchdown runs
of 21 and 36 yards, while Means added a 16-yard score to end the first quarter.
Matt Williams led Anna with 77 yards on 19 carries and scored on a 3-yard run
in the third quarter. Eddie Puskarich added a 30-yard
field goal for Lovejoy, but Anna (2-3) still has plenty to build on entering
district play after going winless during the 2008 season.

Liberty-Eylau 45, Paris 31
PARIS - Kendall King returned a blocked
punt 30 yards for a touchdown, and it seemed like it was home-sweet-home for
Paris after coming off a three-game road trip in which it was 2-1.
Once Marquez Clark ran the ensuing kickoff the other way, it was no looking
back for the visiting Leopards.
Tra Carson ran 21 times for 213 yards and a touchdown
for Liberty-Eylau, who had 516 yards of total
offense, including 406 on the ground. Josh Webster added 97 yards on 10
carries, and Alex Watson threw an 84-yard touchdown pass to Brian Reed.
Aaron Ethridge had a 1-yard touchdown run, and the
Wildcat defense stayed in the game with a safety after putting pressure on
Watson and forcing a holding penalty in the end zone.
Corban Taylor threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Tevin Gray to help Paris trail only 31-23 at halftime, but
Trey Norman and Carson answered with scoring runs to help put the outcome out
of reach.
Tyrell Smith ran 15 times for 135 yards and a fourth-quarter touchdown for
Paris (2-3).
