Week 5 Summaries and Boxes HONEY GROVE - Homecoming games are a time for fans and
alumni to come together, have a good time and watch their team win - usually
against an inferior opponent. The only difference with Honey Grove on Friday was the
fact it was playing a Tom Bean team it knew had just as good a chance to win.
Unfortunately for the visiting Tomcats, it didn’t show on the scoreboard. Zack Patt made the most of his seven carries, rushing for
84 yards and three touchdowns, while the Warrior defense held Tom Bean in check
throughout for a 41-20 victory to enter next week’s game at Gunter on a high
note. Courtland Finney received a bulk of the work with 11
carries for 149 yards and a score for Honey Grove (2-3, 1-1 District 11-2A).
Quarterback Dillon Baugh added 80 yards on nine carries and a fourth-quarter
score. The Warriors seemed to build off their defensive play as
well as a touchdown with four seconds remaining in the first half to carry a
14-0 advantage into the third quarter. Tom Bean quarterback Hunter Hendry, who ran 15 times for
65 yards, scored from two yards out to bring the Tomcats within eight after a
missed extra point. He completed 15 of 31 passes for 199 yards, but was never
in sync and threw a pair of interceptions. Honey Grove would have none of it, answering less than a
minute later on Finney’s 59-yard score. Timely defense along with a pair of Tom
Bean turnovers allowed the Warriors to put the game out of reach early in the
fourth quarter on Baugh’s 25-yard touchdown run and a 3-yarder from Patt for a
34-6 advantage. Colby Pennell, who ran 11 times for 35 yards, was held in
check for most of the game but did score on a 1-yard run with less than two
minutes left in the game. Patt added his third touchdown from 50 yards out, and
Pennell scored again on a 45-yard scoring pass from Hendry with four seconds
remaining. Patt scored from seven yards out in the first quarter for
a 7-0 lead, and despite mistakes and minimal yardage throughout the opening two
quarters, the Tomcats (1-4, 0-2) stayed in the game with solid defense of their
own. Brandarious Brown bulled his way into the end zone from a
yard out with four seconds remaining in the half to give the Warriors the
momentum they needed in the third quarter. Brown finished with 40 yards on 10
carries. Hendry’s top two targets, brothers Jake and Mitch
Trentman, were also unable to have a breakout game due to Honey Grove’s defense
with the likes of Cam Brooks along with Ben Caldwell and Corwin Louis, who each
had an interception. Jake Trentman had 87 yards on five receptions, while
younger brother Mitch added three catches for 78 yards. The Warrior defensive
line of Dylan Bloodworth, Jordan Mallicote, Jesse Gaither, Tre Goodwin and Sam
Velis put constant pressure on Hendry and turned around on the other end
offensively and created plenty of room for Patt, Finney, Baugh and Brown to
run. The end result was 367 yards rushing on 42 carries and a
winning attitude entering a game against two-time defending district champion
Gunter on the road. Tom Bean returns home to face a Leonard team eager for
payback after a one-point loss in 2008 in which the Tigers sat home while the
Tomcats went to the playoffs before losing to Paul Pewitt in Greenville. Honey Grove 41, Tom Bean 20

was off the mark, as visiting Whitewright’s attempt to ruin Bells’ homecoming
went for naught after blowing an 11-point third-quarter lead.
Kolby Milner ran 21 times for 212 yards for the Panthers
(2-3, 1-1) , who rebounded from last week’s loss to
two-time defending district champion Gunter. They did so in dramatic fashion
after posting their fourth-quarter comeback. Milner scored on a 1-yard run with under five minutes to
play, leaving Bells down 24-19. Bud Pedigo later put the Panthers up a point
with 33 seconds left on his 12-yard touchdown run. Whitewright (0-5, 0-2) scored first on Dilworth’s 26-yard
field goal only to be answered by a 22-yard touchdown pass from Nate Neal to
Colton Cockrill. The Tigers took over the second quarter and were led by
the play of Steven Spann, who completed 16 of 31 passes for 266 yards and a
touchdown, but also had two interceptions. Milner answered Spann’s 1-yard scoring run with one of
his own from 52 yards out. Spann responded with a 28-yard touchdown for a 24-13
halftime lead that stretched into the fourth quarter after the defenses took
over the first 12 minutes of the second half. Bells 25, Whitewright 24

touchdowns for the visiting Tigers.
Gunter (5-0, 2-0 District 11-4A) entered the second half
with a 35-0 lead and scored twice more on backup quarterback Richard Young’s
38-yard touchdown pass to starter Colton Hinson and Fabian Montes’ 1-yard run. Gunter was four yards shy of having 500 yards of total
offense. Chase Fountaine prevented the shutout with a 12-yard
touchdown pass to Bronco Wildman in the fourth quarter. Tucker scored on runs of 25, 2 and 40 yards in the first
quarter for 21 straight Gunter points. Colton Hinson threw a 2-yard scoring pass to Price
Ferrell, and Leo Castorena (five carries, 65 yards) added a 1-yard touchdown
run The Tigers intercepted three passes, as Fountaine was 12
of 26 for 125 yards, while Hinson completed three of his four passes for 100
yards, including a 40-yarder to Tucker. Melvin Rodriguez led the Bulldogs (3-2, 1-1) with 82
yards on 21 carries, while Casey Davis was the leading receiver with four
receptions four 46 yards. Richie Robledo finished with 81 yards on 11 carries for

how hard their fans tried to get them over the hump, the host Tigers always
seemed to be one step behind Melissa.
The Cardinals entered the game intent on continuing their
push toward unseating Gunter from the top of District 11-2A and used five
Leonard turnovers to their advantage. Melissa (4-1, 2-0) extended its small lead to 14 on Wes
McQueen’s 33-yard touchdown pass to Nathan Warren. The sophomore completed only
five of 16 passes for 98 yards but did throw for two scores and managed the
game most of the night (only one interception). Reggie Robinson, who ran 16 times for a game-high 137
yards and two touchdowns, got the Tigers (4-1, 1-1) within a touchdown after
his 26-yard run, but Melissa responded in the fourth quarter. Nick Palmer scored twice to put the game away, despite
the best efforts of senior quarterback Will Cowan, who was held to 141 yards of
total offense. Palmer led the Cardinals with 73 yards on 10 carries.
Cody Morgan added 15 carries for 60 yards and a first-quarter touchdown to put
Melissa on top. Robinson answered with a 4-yard score in the second, but
McQueen’s 18-yard touchdown pass to Brodie Russell put the Cardinals ahead 14-7 at the half. Melissa 35, Leonard 21

Denison’s 65-64 win against McKinney one year ago, it was Jordan Taylor’s time
to shine in a game where the Yellow Jackets set a school-record for points.
Taylor ran 16 times for 184 yards and five touchdowns and
completed 13 of 14 passes for 184 more yards and another score for Denison
(4-1, 2-0). The Yellow Jackets scored the first 31 points, as Jones
ran 24 times for 198 yards and a touchdown, and receiver Kyle Galyon added 98
yards on seven receptions and scored a touchdown. LSU commit Zach Lee was 16 of 33 for 239 yards and two
touchdowns to Matt Lipka, who caught four passes for 122 yards. Damian Willis had 138 yards on 13 carries and two
touchdowns for the Lions (0-5, 0-3). Denison, who is at Frisco Wakeland this week in a battle
of district unbeatens, also scored touchdowns in less than 1 ½ minutes spanning
the first and second quarters on fumble returns for scores by Hayden Chapman
and Darian Springfield. McKinney gave up 611 yards to the Yellow Jackets and has
given up almost 700 yards per game this season. Denison 75, McKinney 37

was the beneficiary of a 46-yard touchdown pass from Rosser in the third
quarter. Jarold McPherson, who had an interception in the win,
added a 20-yard scoring run. Brady Kennedy tried to keep the Rebels (1-4, 0-2) in the
game, completing 15 of 38 passes for 172 yards, but they couldn’t find the end zone
and lost their fourth straight game after a victory in their season opener. Rivercrest was unable to capitalize on two first-half
turnovers and was held to 35 yards rushing on 27 carries. It was due to Clarksville’s strong defensive play and
some timely offense led by catalyst Rosser. Clarksville 26, Rivercrest 0

were one quarter away from keeping their perfect 2009 season intact, but Hooks’
Deonta Henderson had other ideas.
Henderson ran six times for 131 yards and four
touchdowns, including two in the decisive stretch to allow the host Hornets
(2-3, 2-0) to stay atop the district standings alongside Prairiland and Paul
Pewitt (a 17-13 winner against Redwater). Hooks took the lead for good at 31-29 on Henderson’s
79-yard run, and he later added a 13-yarder for insurance. Not to be outdone, he scored for a third time as the
clock hit zero on a 100-yard interception return that was actually closer to
105 yards for the final score. The Hornets had two 100-yard rushers in Henderson and
Demetris Burchette, who carried a bulk of the workload with 119 yards on 23
carries. Jeremy Eddington did his best to keep Chisum in the game
with 318 all-purpose yards, including 226 yards on 26 carries and two
touchdowns. His 73-yard scoring run gave the Mustangs (4-1, 1-1) an early 8-0
lead after Zach Millsap’s two-point conversion pass to Brian Glover. Hooks answered with 18 straight points to take a 10-point
halftime lead. Henderson scored on runs of nine and two yards with a
21-yard touchdown pass from freshman quarterback Aaron Doddy to Demonte Bailey
mixed in. Eddington scored from 18 yards out midway through the
third quarter, threw a two-point pass to Tyler Jeffery and ran a 62-yard fumble
return into the end zone for good measure to put Chisum back in front 22-18. Hooks 44, Chisum 29

nearing the halfway point of the season and have a lead sometimes don’t know
how to keep it, and North Lamar is an example.
The Panthers led by four entering the fourth quarter, but
host Jefferson (2-3) scored 14 unanswered points to send North Lamar into
district play without a win. Clarence Lee completed eight of 13 passes for 106 yards
and a touchdown, a 17-yard pass to D.J. McDonald, to give the Bulldogs the lead
for good. Destin Mosley, who ran 18 times for 73 yards, added a 3-yard
touchdown run for insurance. Jefferson scored the first 10 points in the first quarter
on a 25-yard field goal by Connor Carroll and Lee’s 11-yard run. North Lamar (0-5) responded in the second quarter with
Tyler Walston’s 8-yard touchdown pass to Colton Perry and Cody Daniel’s blocked
punt return for a 14-10 advantage at halftime. The lead held true after three
quarters due to stingy defensive play on both sides. Dakota Boles finished with 104 yards on 25 carries for
the Panthers, who open District 10-3A play at home this week against Anna. Jefferson 24, North Lamar 14

Callisburg 69, Sunnyvale 19 CALLISBURG – Bobby Dorman needed only five carries to amass
112 yards and three touchdowns, as Callisburg eased past Sunnyvale on
homecoming night to remain undefeated entering this week’s district-opening
grudge match against Aubrey.
Dorman also passed for 140 yards, completing all four of
his passes, including three of them for touchdowns. Two of them went to
Langston Jones from 55 and 51 yards out (his only two catches of the game),
while the other was a 16-yarder to Cole Wescoat. Sunnyvale pulled within 7-6 midway through the first
quarter after scoring on a fumble return, but the rout was on after that, with
the Wildcats (5-0) scoring 48 of the next 54 points. Chris Apala had a 1-yard touchdown run in the first
quarter, and Brandon Rochell had a 7-yarder in the second. Jones, who had 80 yards
on eight carries, added a third score from 26 yards out in the third quarter,
and Michael Paxton added a 44-yard interception return for a score. Callisburg attempts to become the first team to score
against Aubrey this season. In other non-district action involving District 10-2A
teams, Valley View beat Fort Worth Christian 47-14.
