Week 6 Summaries and Boxes FRISCO - Denison just racked up 556
yards of offense, but all anyone wanted to talk about late Friday night was the
Yellow Jacket defense. Two teams
entered Pizza Hut Park with undefeated district records, but Denison showed why
defense can go a long way in determining which group left with its perfect mark
intact. The
defending Class 9-4A champion Yellow Jackets showed why they remain the team to
beat after scoring the game’s first 21 points, and they were never seriously
threatened in an eventual 56-28 win. Jordan
Taylor finished with 307 yards of total offense, rushing 10 times for 145 yards
and four touchdowns while completing 13 of 22 passes for 162 more yards and a
score. D.J. Jones had 189 yards on 21 carries and three touchdowns for Denison
(5-1, 3-0), who returns to Frisco this week for a game against the Raccoons at
Memorial Stadium. “Our
defense did a nice job, especially in the first half,” Yellow Jacket coach Cody
White said. “We missed some tackles and need to work some on our alignment, but
we went out and beat a very good football team. I’ve always believed defense
wins championships.” Denison
is still a long way to go from building on its success from 2008, but is well
on its way, with the only blemish being a 27-21 loss at Big Spring in Week 1. The
Yellow Jackets were the epitome of a quick-strike offense after scoring a pair
of touchdowns in a little more than 40 seconds to end the first half and needed
only five plays and just more than two minutes to cover 60 yards on their
opening possession of the second half to score again. Cody
Reeves caught his first pass of the game for 13 yards to set up Jones’ 8-yard
scoring run for a 49-14 Denison lead. The Wolverines (5-1, 2-1) answered with
an 11-play drive, culminating with Tyler Kirkindoll’s
7-yard touchdown pass to Alex Bateman. Wakeland tried to get back in the game after intercepting Taylor and
recovering a fumble. David Robason scored from 15
yards out on another 11-play scoring drive, but he was held in check most of
the night after finishing with 79 yards on 18 carries. The
Wolverines recovered a nifty onside kick but couldn’t take advantage and turned
the ball over on downs. Taylor scored two plays later on a 51-yard run for an
insurance score, and Reeves added a late interception for good measure. “Our
defensive line stepped up tonight and put a lot of pressure on their
quarterback,” Reeves said. “We fed off of them and busted heads tonight. We
knew this was going to be a really physical game, so we had to go at them all
night, and we did a good job of it.” The
game’s first five possessions resulted in punts until Denison finally got on
the scoreboard. Taylor’s
16-yard pass to Kyle Galyon set up his own 20-yard
touchdown run, and the Yellow Jackets needed less than two minutes to score
again after Jones dove past the pylon for an 8-yard score. The touchdown was
set up by a 47-yard run by Reeves on a reverse and Taylor’s 31-yard pass to Galyon. Kirkindoll, who completed 33 of 56 passes for 302 yards, had a streaky
outing after throwing nine incomplete passes to start the game, although it
took a diving last-minute stop by Reeves late in the first quarter to prevent a
7-7 tie. Wakeland was unable to capitalize after punt returns of 60 and 50
yards by Bateman resulted in solid field position. The
first resulted in a punt, and the Wolverines reached the Denison 14 on the
second before Zach Paul’s field-goal attempt hit the right side of the
crossbar. The aforementioned defensive pressure came to light after Kirkindoll was sacked by Jaqwaylin
Arps. “We’ve
got a few personnel issues we need to fix and need to have guys on the field
who can make plays,” White said. “We cost ourselves with penalties on the first
two drives.” Taylor
answered eight plays later on a 36-yard touchdown run where he ran around and
through the Wakeland defense for a 21-0 lead. Kirkindoll responded with a 12-yard touchdown pass to Thomas Craig on
third down to cap an eight-play drive. The
Denison defense came through with another big play when the Wolverines were
threatening to pull within a touchdown. Kirkindoll
completed a 15-yard pass to Trent Smiley, but Jake Marcum returned a fumble 23
yards after Smiley was stripped, and three running plays led to Taylor’s
21-yard touchdown pass to Jimmay Mundine. “Our
defense stepped up tonight, and when our offense isn’t clicking, we’re always
feeding off of them,” Taylor said. “We had some penalties and things early to
stall some drives, but it wasn’t a bad performance. There is always room for
more improvement.” Craig’s
24-yard run off a fake did allow Wakeland to cut the
Yellow Jacket lead in half on a score set up by passes to Bateman and Dallas
Grier for 13 and 18 yards, respectively. Denison
had none of it, with Taylor completing a 49-yard screen pass to Jones on third
down and calling his own number from a yard out for a 35-14 lead. The
Wolverines reached the Denison 20 before stalling, as Kirkindoll
had a string of 10 straight pass completions broken up. Jones
eventually tacked on a 3-yard touchdown run for a 42-14 advantage at the half. “We
want to keep clicking and do what we can each week to improve,” Jones said.
“The defense did a good job of shutting down McKinney and built off of it this
week. We just went out and beat an undefeated team, so anytime you do that, you
know you did well.” Wakeland must regroup with a road game this week at Sherman, the district’s other undefeated team after a win
against Centennial. Wolverines coach Marty Secord talked to his team in the
post-game huddle about still having plenty to play for with four games
remaining on the regular-season schedule. Secord
looked back at the first-half fumble and his team’s inability to take advantage
of its field position. “We
had a chance to climb back in the game, but the fumble swung all the momentum
back in their favor,” Secord said. “I’m so proud of our kids for fighting back
against an outstanding football team with tremendous players. Their defensive
line dominated us.” Denison 56,

10-3A Van Alstyne 15, Bonham 7 BONHAM - The outcome was eerily
familiar to the Bonham football team - one in which it could compare to an
earlier game against Whitesboro. The
Purple Warrior defense gave up 337 yards to visiting Van Alstyne
but perhaps played the Panthers better than any team all year with the possible
exception of Farmersville. The only problem was the fact the outcome wound up
the same as it has all season, as the offense couldn’t catch up with the
defense, and the undefeated Panthers had just enough in their arsenal to come
away with a 15-7 win. The Warriors dropped to 0-6, 0-1. Orion
Thomas ran nine times for 108 yards and a 45-yard touchdown, while Chris Burge
completed nine of 16 passes for 119 yards and scored on a 20-yard run, as the
Panthers (6-0, 1-0) took advantage of a second-quarter safety to escape with
the victory. Bonham
