The Panthers’ defense came to the forefront in the second half after Zach Thrash’s 25-yard interception return for a touchdown.

It was one of two interceptions thrown by Coyotes quarterback Tyler Elliott, who finished four of 12 for 36 yards.

Chris Burge, who completed 14 of 24 passes for 108 yards, did throw a pair of interceptions and almost went a second straight week without a touchdown pass until his 11-yard scoring toss to Chance Grayson that helped lead to a 14-point fourth quarter.

Grayson caught five passes for 57 yards.

Anna (2-5, 0-2) came within one possession of potentially tying the game on Matt Williams’ 61-yard touchdown run.

Thomas scored on runs of 26 and 37 yards for a 14-0 lead, until Williams (19 carries, 76 yards) cut the deficit in half at the break.

The Panthers, who return home this week to face Commerce, doubled Anna in overall yardage 288-144.

Evans added his third touchdown pass from 22 yards out to Brock Squier.

Kielyn Lewis threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Merit Banks before the half for the Leopards (5-2, 1-1), who trailed 21-6 at the half.

Gainesville was unable to build off their district-opening win against Whitesboro last week and must now finish with one more win than Sanger or would lose a tiebreaker.

Evans and Howard added touchdown runs in the third quarter for Sanger.

Kenyon Morgan added a 1-yard touchdown for Gainesville after replacing starting running back DeShawn Franklin, who was lost to a knee injury.

Kyle Stone was 13 of 22 for 186 yards, and Zach Witherspoon had 134 yards on five receptions for Quinlan Ford (1-6, 1-1).

Lovejoy was happy to get back to its winning ways and didn’t want to go 0-2 in district play, but running back Blake Martin was lost to a first-quarter knee injury.

Collin Strahan added a 6-yard scoring run and finished with 239 all-purpose yards, including 129 rushing on 19 carries.

Strahan scored from three yards out and threw a 2-point pass to Paul Blasingame after a scoreless first quarter and finished with 111 yards on nine of 21 passing with an interception.

Counterpart Trevor Schilling responded with a 2-yard run and 2-point run of his own to tie the game 8-8 at halftime and didn’t throw for a touchdown despite completing 19 of 40 passes for 277 yards.

Aubrey 54, Pottsboro 7

AUBREY - Chase Mahurin’s 74-yard touchdown on a kickoff return to begin the game seemed to ignite the Chaparrals, who won seven games for only the sixth time in school history dating to the last 35 years.

The Cardinals (0-7, 0-2) tied the game 7-7 after the first quarter on Matt Potter’s 1-yard touchdown run, but Levi Birdsong field goals of 29 and 32 yards led the way to 47 unanswered points. Potter ran 12 times for a game-high 82 yards.

Albert Silva had a 30-yard touchdown run, and Billy Feathers showed his versatility with a 20-yard touchdown run, a 10-yard scoring run off a fumble return and a 41-yard touchdown reception from James Wurster, who added touchdown runs of 29 and two yards.

Wurster completed six of 13 passes for 111 yards, including a 41-yarder to Mahurin.

Kevin Garcia accounted for 100 of the Cardinals’ 191 yards of total offense. Pottsboro hosts Callisburg this week, while Aubrey (7-0, 2-0) travels to S&S.

District 11-2A

Howe 12, Whitewright 10

HOWE - Chase Fountaine threw a 33-yard pass to Casey Davis with just more than a minute remaining in the game to keep Howe alive in the chase for the third and final playoff spot in district.

Davis also scored a touchdown on the ground for the Bulldogs (4-3, 2-2), who are currently tied with Leonard for fourth place.

Fountaine completed 17 of 25 passes for 277 yards, with Bronco Wildman catching seven of them for 130 yards.

Whitewright (0-7, 0-4) extended its one-point lead to four on Tim Dilworth’s 22-yard field goal for the only points of the third quarter.

The Tigers, who let one get away at Bells earlier this season, almost secured its first win of the season until Fountaine’s winning touchdown pass allowed Howe to keep its playoff hopes alive.

Steven Spann threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Hamilton Luper as the first-quarter clock wound down. Davis answered in the waning seconds of the first half on a 4-yard run, but the kick failed, leaving the Bulldogs down 7-6 at the half.

Howe has a key game this week at Honey Grove, while Whitewright travels to Tom Bean, where one team will get its first district win of the season.

Gunter 27, Leonard 13

LEONARD - Chad Tucker ran 17 times for 139 yards, as Gunter attempted only two passes in its win against Leonard to remain atop the district standings with a battle of unbeaten teams set for this week at home against Melissa.

Leonard (5-2, 2-2) pulled within seven in the third quarter after Will Cowan’s 3-yard touchdown run, but Tucker answered less than a minute into the fourth quarter with a 25-yard scoring run to put the game out of reach.

Reggie Robinson ran 17 times for 72 yards, with Cowan adding 68 yards on 13 carries for the Tigers, who travel to Bells this week for a key district game in which the winner could potentially grab the third and final playoff berth with a tiebreaker and the loser staying home.

Tucker scored on a 2-yard run midway through the first quarter, and Colton Hinson added a 4-yard touchdown in the second for a 14-0 Tiger lead.

Robinson answered from a yard out, but A.J. Phillips ran an interception the other way 71 yards for a touchdown as time expired in the first half to give Gunter some much-needed momentum into the break.

The 2008 district champion Tigers will now square off against Melissa, where only an upset in the final two weeks of the season could prevent the winner from winning the title in 2009.

Bells 20, Honey Grove 13

HONEY GROVE - Cody Stern had a productive night on both sides of the football, but nothing was bigger than his 15-yard fumble return in the fourth quarter that turned a one-point lead into the final margin.

Honey Grove (2-5, 1-3) missed a potential chance to tie the game 14-14 with a missed extra point in the third quarter after Dillon Baugh’s 15-yard run that left the Warriors trailing by a point.

Stern made them pay in the fourth quarter with his defensive touchdown, realistically knocking Honey Grove out of playoff contention. The Warriors must win their final three games and have Bells (4-3, 3-1) lose its final three.

Courtland Finney put the Warriors on the scoreboard less than a minute into the second quarter with a 62-yard touchdown run.

Zach Wornhor answered from 12 yards out, and Kolby Milner threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Stern with less than 30 seconds remaining in the half for a 14-7 Panther lead.

Zack Patt caught seven passes for 102 yards for the Warriors, while Dijon Finney added 75 yards on a pair of receptions.

Honey Grove hosts Howe this week, where the winner still has an outside shot at a playoff berth, while the loser is most likely eliminated. There is the chance for a four-way tie which would make things very interesting the final two weeks.

MELISSA - Sophomore quarterback Wes McQueen was six of 12 for 209 yards and three touchdowns, as Melissa (6-1, 4-0) prepares for a battle of district leaders this week against Gunter.

The Cardinals scored the final 35 points, beginning with touchdown runs of eight and 49 yards by Aaron Bush and Cody Morgan, who finished with a game-high 118 yards on 12 carries.

John Young, who had 70 yards on four carries, added a 17-yard touchdown run, and the defense set the tone early with Bush’s 77-yard interception return for a touchdown.

McQueen threw touchdown passes of 69 and 29 yards to Brodie Russell and Dallon Bates. Russell finished with three receptions for 96 yards, and McQueen also threw a 49-yard touchdown pass to Nathan Warren.

Nick Palmer scored from four yards out for a 20-0 lead.

Hunter Hendry got the Tomcats (1-6, 0-4) on the board with a 16-yard touchdown pass to Jake Trentman. Colby Pennell led the ground game with 58 yards on 19 carries.

District 12-2A

Chisum 20, Clarksville 15

CLARKSVILLE - Jeremy Eddington scored from five yards out midway through the fourth quarter to lift Chisum (5-2, 2-2) to a key district win at Clarksville to remain two games behind the third and final playoff spot with three to play.

Eddington finished with 119 yards on 21 carries and two touchdowns, but Clarksville (3-4, 1-3) seemed to gain momentum before the half and took it into the third quarter.

The Tigers clung to a 15-14 lead, as almost the first 20 minutes of the second half were scoreless before Eddington saved the game for Chisum.

H.B. Rosser threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to put Clarksville on the board, but Eddington responded with a 12-yard scoring run and 2-point run for an 8-7 Mustang lead after the first eight minutes.

T.J. Briscoe extended the advantage to seven after his 14-yard run with a little more than one minute gone in the second quarter. Rosser, who ran 18 times for a modest 66 yards, answered from 15 yards out and added a 2-point run for a 15-14 Clarksville lead at the half.

Chisum carries momentum into this week’s home game against rival and co-district leader Prairiland, while Clarksville travels to third-place Hooks, who is currently one game behind the Patriots and Paul Pewitt.

Prairiland 20, Redwater 14

PATTONVILLE - Payne Schuelke wanted one more chance after missing on a fourth-down pass to Zach McLamore and his team tied with visiting Redwater 14-14.

Schuelke got his wish and made the most of it, throwing a 21-yard touchdown pass to Todd Fendley in the fourth quarter to break the deadlock and preserve the win for the co-district leading Patriots on homecoming night.

Randal Sessums ran 35 times for 201 yards and a touchdown for Prairiland (7-0, 2-0), who has won 16 of its last 17 regular-season games and 16 of 18 overall. Schuelke completed only two passes in the game, but none was more important than the one to Fendley.

Schuelke scored from a yard out, and Justin Harris added a 2-point run for an 8-0 Patriot lead, but Hunter Flood responded with a 12-yard touchdown run to pull the Dragons (3-4, 1-3) within two after the first eight minutes.

Sessums responded with a 1-yard scoring run for an eight-point lead at the break.

Flood threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Ty Lewis midway through the third quarter, and Austin Nipper added the 2-point run to tie the game 14-14 before Prairiland’s fourth-quarter heroics. The defense made one final stop and allowed Schuelke to run out the clock.

Redwater returns home to host Rivercrest this week, while the Patriots hit the road to face rival Chisum.

Rivercrest 33, DeKalb 14

BOGATA - Jordan White ran 20 times for 187 yards, and Brady Kennedy added 100 yards on 15 carries, as Rivercrest beat DeKalb for the first time in school history and ended a five-game losing streak since its season-opening win against Alba-Golden.

The Rebels (2-5, 1-3) entered the game having been shut out in their previous two contests and had scored only seven points in their last three games overall before putting up 14 in the first quarter against the Bears (0-7, 0-4), who were led by Shakiel Wherry’s 93 yards on 17 carries.

Rivercrest broke a 14-14 tie in the third quarter on White’s 11-yard touchdown run. He added another from four yards out a little more than a minute into the fourth for some insurance.

Kennedy put the game out of reach in a big way with a 72-yard touchdown pass to Kyle McCuller, as the Rebels shut out DeKalb in the second half.

Kennedy scored 45 seconds into the game on a 1-yard touchdown run and an 11-yarder later in the first quarter for a 14-0 lead.

Chucky Slade, who finished with 57 yards on 14 carries, scored from three yards out, and Wherry’s 20-yard scoring run with a little more than a minute remaining in the half tied the game 14-14 at the break.

District 13-A

Muenster 41, Blue Ridge 6

BLUE RIDGE - Levi Trubenbach accounted for 336 all-purpose yards, as Muenster (5-3, 1-1) secured its first district win of the season.

Trubenbach ran seven times for 91 yards and a lengthy touchdown run, but he was even more impressive in the passing game, completing 13 of 23 attempts for 245 yards and five first-half touchdowns with only one interception.

Trubenbach had touchdown passes of 10 yards to Eric Hellman, 45 yards to Tyler Anderle and 25 yards to Jason Luke for a 21-0 first-quarter lead. He followed it with scoring tosses of 20 yards to Anderle and 50 yards to Hellman and capped it off with a 51-yard touchdown run for a 47-0 advantage.

Luke caught six passes for 113 yards, Anderle had three receptions for 70 yards and Hellman added 67 yards on three catches.

Brennan Smith scored from a yard out to break the Hornets’ shutout bid, as all the scoring was done in the first half.

Muenster has a tough game on its hands this week at home against Collinsville, who had plenty of time to scout and is coming off a last-minute 19-12 win against Blue Ridge in Week 6.

The Tigers (3-5, 0-2) travel to Era (5-2, 0-1), who lost 45-0 at Lindsay, this week for the Hornets’ homecoming.
