Week 8 Summaries and Boxes
Friday’s Games
Non-district
BY TYLER CLIFTON
KFYN SPORTS DIRECTOR

BONHAM - The sun came out Friday afternoon, fans enjoyed themselves with a pre-game tailgate party, and things seemed to be shiny for the Bonham football team with six minutes remaining in its District 10-3A game against North Lamar.

The Warriors were on the brink of potentially securing their first win of the 2009 season, but the Panthers’ experience late in games allowed them to remain calm under pressure and come away with a late touchdown and a 21-14 win at Warrior Stadium.

North Lamar (2-6, 2-1) was coming off a 13-point loss to rival Paris and came away with the victory in large part because the running game it has used successfully in all 13 years of head coach Tommy Felty’s regime.

One ironic twist of fate was the fact the Panthers won the game on a pass play. It was one they ran six times in the game and had successfully completed just once in large part because of a few drops. Dillon Wilson had the first successful reception for 18 yards.

Bonham’s defense was susceptible to the play, and David Bozarth caught Ryan White’s pass in stride and turned it up another gear for a 47-yard touchdown. Bonham was held on downs its next possession, but the Warrior defense that had arguably its best performance from the midway of the second quarter on made a fourth-down stop on Panther running back Dakota Boles and had 59 seconds to go for the tie.

Kyle Washington threw a 13-yard pass to Chase Gregory and had another one just miss the mark near midfield. His third-down attempt was tipped and intercepted by Tanner Goff (his second of the game) to send Bonham (0-8, 0-3) home with another close defeat.

North Lamar used a little more than four minutes to amass 56 yards on nine running plays during its opening possession.

Boles, the Panthers’ workhorse who entered the game with exactly 800 yards and finished this game with 143 more on 36 carries, ran six times for 43 yards on the drive. He had a fortunate bounce in the end zone after falling on top of his own fumble for a 3-yard touchdown.

Bonham didn’t open the game well with a three-and-out, but the defense held strong and stopped the Panthers on fourth down. A second punt allowed North Lamar to begin its second scoring drive.

Ten more running plays covered 54 yards, as Boles ran 18 times on fourth down and Keathan Morris had 12 more on a third-down play to set up White’s four-yard scoring run and 14-0 lead.

The Panthers recovered a fumble two plays later, but the defense kicked it up a notch and prevented the game from falling apart the way it did one week ago in a 42-6 loss at Commerce.

North Lamar reached the Warrior 11 yard line, but Michael Hubbard and Shane Wheeler combined to sack White on fourth down and give the Warriors a new lease on life.

Washington, who uncharacteristically went the first 21 minutes without a carry, had a pair of runs for 30 yards and threw passes of nine and 35 yards to Dalton Cagle. The only problem was having only three seconds and one final all-or-nothing play before the half.

The offensive line gave Washington plenty of time to roam around in the pocket, and he found a gaping hole in the end zone to a wide-open Cagle for the touchdown. It was the third straight time the duo hooked up on as many plays, and it had the Warriors on an emotional high entering the locker room down only 14-7 with a chance to tie the game after receiving the ball to open the second half.

The teams exchanged punts, and Goff intercepted Washington midway through the third quarter. The Bonham defense once again stopped the bleeding, with Hubbard and James Talley combining for a second sack of White and forcing another Panther punt.

T.J. Shirley intercepted Washington , but the Panthers stalled at midfield on their drive that ended a scoreless third quarter.

Bonham was forced to start on its own six yard line after a false-start penalty, but Washington had a key 19-yard run on third down that was aided by a Panther personal foul. Washington later threw a 14-yard pass to Daine Dunlap on another third-and-long play followed by a 12-yard run by Braylon Mitchell.

Good things seem to come in threes such as they did on the three straight conversions to Cagle to end the first half, and the same occurred on this drive, as the Warriors completed their 94-yard march into the end zone on another third-down pass from Washington to Dunlap for a 9-yard touchdown pass to tie the game 14-14 with six minutes remaining in regulation.

North Lamar showed how it was able to make it a habit of competing in the playoffs as a Class 4A school before returning to the 3A level a year ago by not losing its composure.

Paris 49, Anna 14

PARIS - The Purple Coyotes drew first blood Friday night, but the host Wildcats scored 21 straight points in the second quarter and pulled away for what they hope is eventually another District 10-3A championship.

The Wildcats (5-3, 3-0) had a pair of 100-yard rushers, with Aaron Ethridge leading the way with his 168 yards on 14 carries and four touchdowns. Tyrell Smith ran nine times for 136 yards and a score, as Paris hosts Bonham this week at Noyes Stadium.

Ethridge scored on a 15-yard run and followed Smith’s 70-yard touchdown with another from 59 yards out.

Matt Williams, who led the Anna on the ground with 156 yards on 33 carries, tried to keep the Coyotes (2-6, 0-3) in the game with a 5-yard touchdown run with less than a minute remaining in the first half, but the Wildcats couldn’t be stopped in dominating the final two quarters.

Ethridge scored his fourth touchdown with a little more than a minute gone in the third quarter on a 36-yard run, and Corban Taylor added a 13-yard touchdown pass to Tavairus Williams.

Kendall King returned an interception 77 yards for the game’s final interception, as Paris posted a second-half shutout.

GAINESVILLE – Jamarick Simmons ran 16 times for 124 yards and two touchdowns, including one from 77 yards out, as the Bobcats rebounded from last week’s loss at home to defending state champion and rival Prosper.

Jose Romero had a touchdown run and reception, and Cody Sandler also had a 61-yard touchdown run for Celina (5-3, 2-1).

Alex Juarez added a 21-yard field goal in the win, as the Bobcats finished with 377 yards of total offense and held the Leopards (5-3, 1-2) to 118.

Romero scored from four yards out, and Jacob Stephenson’s two-point pass to Caleb Lavey gave Celina an 8-0 lead after the first 12 minutes.

Juarez kicked his field goal, as a Harrison Sherwood fumble recovery and Romero interception set up the first two scores. Simmons raced 77 yards to the end zone for an 18-0 advantage at the half.

Sandler did the same with his long scoring run in the third quarter, and Cody Worrell added a 1-yard touchdown pass to Romero.

Simmons’ 1-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter provided the final margin for the Bobcats.

Kevin Bartley caught six passes for 146 yards and a touchdown, while Langston Jones added 145 yards on 24 carries for the Wildcats (7-1, 2-1), who have their biggest game of the regular season this week against undefeated and seventh-ranked Pilot Point, who defeated Valley View.

Dorman threw a 29-yard scoring pass to Bartley in the third quarter and added a 12-yard touchdown run in the fourth for the final margin.

Callisburg finished with 499 yards of offense and held the Cardinals (0-8, 0-3) to 184.

The Wildcats came out on the winning end despite sometimes sloppy play with 12 penalties for 110 yards.

Running back Matt Potter led Pottsboro, who hosts S&S this week, with 91 yards on 12 carries.

James Wurster completed six of 12 passes for 142 yards and a touchdown, while Levi Birdsong had three receptions for 77 yards and a touchdown.

The Rams (2-6, 0-3), who travel to Pottsboro this week for a game where one team will win its first district game of the season, were held to 56 yards of total offense, including minus-30 yards rushing.

Aubrey tries to clinch a playoff berth this week with its final home game of the year against Valley View. A win coupled with a Pilot Point victory at Callisburg would set up a season finale for the district championship.

Pilot Point 45, Valley View 7

VALLEY VIEW – Jarman Johnson ran 19 times for 207 yards and three touchdowns to help lead seventh-ranked Pilot Point back to the playoffs with a convincing road win.

The Bearcats (8-0, 3-0) clinched a playoff berth with the victory.

Quarterback Seth Tilley scored on a 6-yard run and threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Colin Noe. Johnson found the end zone from three yards out before Valley View quarterback Scott Willis scored the lone touchdown for the Eagles (4-4, 1-2).

Johnson scored again on a 3-yard touchdown run in the second quarter for a 28-7 halftime lead and added a 52-yard score in the third quarter.

Ruben Martinez kicked a 27-yard field goal in the fourth quarter, and Tilley added his second touchdown of the game from 11 yards out for the final margin.

Pilot Point has the first of two intriguing games to finish the regular season this week at Callisburg before hosting district co-leader Aubrey in Week 10.

The Bearcats finished with 363 yards of total offense and held Valley View to 198.

Willis led the Eagles, who have their second tough game in as many weeks Friday at Aubrey, completing 11 of 34 passes for 129 yards.

Pilot Point’s defense did its part, intercepting Willis three times to take control.

Honey Grove 34, Howe 20

HONEY GROVE - The host Warriors used a strong first quarter to pull away from Howe and keep their chances at a playoff berth alive with two weeks remaining in the season.

Strong defense won the game for Honey Grove (3-5, 2-3), as it forced eight turnovers (five interceptions and three fumbles).

Kurt Ottmo picked off a pair of passes and returned one seven yards for a touchdown for a 21-0 first-quarter lead after quarterback Dillon Baugh and running back Zack Patt scored on short-yardage touchdown runs.

Tyler Ross got the Bulldogs (4-4, 2-3) on the scoreboard with a 3-yard touchdown run but was answered with a 28-yard touchdown pass from Baugh to Dijon Finney for a 27-6 Honey Grove lead at the half.

Chase Fountaine threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Dalton Harris in the third quarter, and Melvin Rodriguez added a 1-yard scoring run in the fourth to draw the Bulldogs within seven, but Patt put the game away with a 20-yard touchdown run.

Cam Brooks, Brandarious Brown and Corwin Louis also had interceptions.

Howe is still officially in the playoff hunt but would have the tall task of having to win out against Leonard and at Melissa and have outside help along the way.

Gunter 24, Melissa 7

GUNTER – Chad Tucker ran 32 times for 273 yards and three first-quarter touchdowns, as the host Tigers all but officially clinched their second district championship with the victory but did grab the Division I playoff berth.

Gunter (8-0, 5-0) amassed 336 yards on 54 carries, with Tucker scoring on three lengthy runs of 50, 64 and 39 yards for a three-touchdown lead.

The Tiger advantage stretched to 24-0 at halftime after Dalton Lee’s successful 39-yard field goal.

Melissa (6-2, 4-1) got on the board in the third quarter on Nick Palmer’s 3-yard touchdown run.

Sophomore quarterback Wes McQueen completed 13 of 26 passes for 166 yards but was intercepted twice.

The Cardinals were unable to take advantage of an interception by John Vroman and a fumble recovery by Aaron Bush.

Gunter gave up 209 yards of total offense but held the Cardinals’ rushing attack to only 43 yards on 26 carries.

Melissa hosts Bells and Howe to end the season and would clinch a playoff berth with a win against the Panthers this week.

BELLS – Reggie Robinson and Will Cowan have been Leonard’s two workhorses all year long, and when the team’s first playoff berth since 1998 was on the line, they made sure the Tigers kept their collective eyes on the prize.

Robinson ran 18 times for 250 yards and two touchdowns, while Cowan added 146 yards on 20 carries and scored five times for Leonard (6-2, 3-2).

Kolby Milner tied the game (4-4, 3-2) with a 2-yard touchdown run and two-point conversion after Robinson scored less than one minute into the game from 51 yards out.

Bud Pedigo threw a 56-yard touchdown pass to Nate Neal to answer a Cowan run and tie the game 14-14 early in the second quarter, but the Tigers began to pull away.

Robinson scored his second touchdown from 23 yards out, while Cowan’s scoring runs of eight and three yards put Leonard up by 20 at the break.

Milner and Cowan exchanged touchdown runs in the third quarter, with Tiger Jake Buchanan getting in on the action with a 4-yard scoring run in the fourth.

TOM BEAN – Hamilton Luper caught three passes for 66 yards, including a pair of touchdown receptions in the fourth quarter, as the Tigers posted a come-from-behind victory in a game pitting two teams in search of their first district win.

Steven Spann completed 19 of 31 passes for 267 yards and the two touchdowns and was able to play around two interceptions. Whitewright (1-7, 1-4), who hosts Honey Grove this week, needed every yard, as it was only able to amass 58 yards on 21 carries.

Chris Bearden caught 12 passes for 111 yards, and Tyrone Swoopes added 72 yards on a pair of catches, including one that set up a Tiger touchdown.

Hunter Hendry was 16 of 26 for 165 yards and a touchdown and ran 28 times for 151 yards and two more scores for the Tomcats (1-7, 0-5), who is at Gunter this week.

Mitch Trentman caught a 19-yard touchdown pass from Hendry, but Whitewright took a 7-6 first-quarter lead after Spann’s 1-yard scoring run. Tim Dilworth’s 33-yard field goal near the end of the half was the only scoring in the second quarter.

Hendry gave Tom Bean the lead with a 1-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and added another less than two minutes into the fourth for a 19-10 Tomcat lead.

Spann got the Tigers within two on his 51-yard touchdown pass to Luper and gave Whitewright the lead for good with a 6-yard scoring toss to Luper.

District 12-2A

Prairiland 20, Chisum 0

PARIS - Payne Schuelke completed seven of 10 passes for 105 yards and two touchdowns, as Prairiland shut out rival Chisum to remain undefeated in the 2009 season and clinch a playoff berth.

It was the 10th consecutive win in the series for the Patriots (8-0, 5-0), who will also compete in the Division II bracket with Paul Pewitt after the Brahmas also clinched a berth with their 47-6 win against DeKalb.

Hooks is the Division I playoff participant, meaning the Hornets will likely play District 11-2A champ Gunter in the first round of the playoffs in three weeks instead of the Patriots.

Randal Sessums ran 26 times for 152 yards and a touchdown for the Patriots (8-0, 5-0), while Tanner Connot and Justin Harris each had interceptions.

Jeremy Eddington ran 17 times for 103 yards, but the Mustangs (5-3, 2-3) were unable to find the end zone and had any chances of reaching the playoffs eliminated once the game was finished. Chisum tries to get back to its winning ways this week at Bogata Rivercrest.

Prairiland has won 17 of its last 18 regular-season games, but this one was closer than the final score suggests.

Schuelke threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Josh Esch in the latter half of the first quarter, and the defenses stiffened, as the 6-0 Patriot lead lasted until the fourth quarter.

Tanner Connot caught a 36-yard touchdown pass from Schuelke, and Sessums added a 2-yard scoring run for insurance.

Hooks 27, Clarksville 12

HOOKS - It was the visiting Tigers who controlled all but one second of the first half, but a last-second touchdown gave the host Hornets the momentum, and it led to 27 unanswered points and a playoff-clinching victory.

Hooks (4-4, 4-1) is the district’s big-school representative and is destined to play District 11-2A champion Gunter in the first round of the bi-district playoffs beginning the week of Nov. 13.

Despite freshman Demetris Burchette’s 209 yards on 36 carries for the Hornets, Clarksville (3-5, 1-4) held a 12-0 lead until Aaron Doddy found Daonte Baty for a 31-yard touchdown pass with one second remaining in the half.

Damarcus Dickerson’s 45-yard touchdown run near the end of the third quarter turned the double-digit deficit into a one-point lead.

Doddy and Baty added scoring runs of 1 and 18 yards, respectively, to lift the Hornets in the fourth quarter.

District 13-A

Era 21, Blue Ridge 0

ERA – Trey Dunn completed a pair of touchdown passes to give the host Hornets a win on homecoming night in a game pitting two teams seeking their first district win.

Dunn threw a 6-yard scoring toss to Justin Lance and ran in the two-point conversion for good measure to give Era an 8-0 halftime lead.

Dunn found Nathan Metzler from 65 yards out in the third quarter to stretch the advantage to 14-0.

Lance added a 56-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, and Metzler added the extra point.

Blue Ridge (3-6, 0-3) couldn’t get its normally-consistent running game going after finishing with only 89 yards on 33 carries. The Tigers host Lindsay Friday in their finale.

Jake Price did convert 12 of 33 passes for 113 yards, with half of his completions going to Jace Koonce for 50 yards.

Seven penalties for 80 yards proved costly and didn’t allow visiting Blue Ridge to find the end zone.

Era (6-2, 1-1) travels to Collinsville this week and faces a Pirate team coming off a 21-13 loss to Muenster.

Adam Simants and Alex Rainwater each led the Tigers with 10 and eight tackles, respectively.

Other leading tacklers for Blue Ridge were Bradley White (seven), Zach Rainwater (six) and Tyler King (five), while Beau Blacketer added an interception.

Muenster 21, Collinsville 13

COLLINSVILLE – Levi Trubenbach completed six of 17 passes for 86 yards and three touchdowns while wearing the number of a fallen former Muenster player, and the Hornets enter this week’s bye on a high note after beating Collinsville on the road.

Trubenbach also ran 22 times for 115 yards while donning the No. 45 jersey of Zach Swirczynski, a former Hornet and Austin College player who died during a pick-up basketball game in February.

Muenster (6-3, 2-1) trailed by a point entering the third quarter until Trubenbach, who also ran for 109 yards, threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Garrett-Walterscheid and found him again for another 8-yard touchdown toss for a 21-7 advantage.

The Pirates were held on downs despite coming up one yard shy of reaching the end zone.

Cory Ragsdale’s 13-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Ford turned it into a one-possession game. The Pirates (4-4, 1-1) reached the Muenster 17 at the end of the game before Scott Porter intercepted Ragsdale for the second time to clinch the victory and set up an interesting final two weeks of the regular season.

Era, who shutout Blue Ridge on homecoming night plays Collinsville this week.

Trubenbach found Andy Flusche for a 60-yard catch-and-run with just more than a minute gone in the second quarter, but Dalton Williams returned an interception 17 yards for a touchdown to give Collinsville a 7-6 halftime lead.
