Week 9 Summaries and Boxes
Friday’s Games
Non-district
BY TYLER CLIFTON
KFYN SPORTS DIRECTOR

SHERMAN– Sherman had already clinched a Division I playoff berth and a game against Newman Smith, but its back was against the wall Friday night against visiting McKinney.

Zac Whitfield’s 17-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter allowed the Bearcats to avoid an upset by the Lions in a 26-23 win at Bearcat Stadium to set up this week’s 111th Battle of the Ax.

Whitfield ran 15 times for 144 yards and had 75 more on two receptions for Sherman (8-1, 6-0), who travels to Munson Stadium this week to face the rival Yellow Jackets.

Madison Carter completed seven of 16 passes for 145 yards and helped give the Bearcats a 12-0 lead on his 31-yard touchdown pass to John Welborn and a 1-yard scoring run. The only blemish was an interception, his first in nine games this season.

Zach Lee, who was 20 of 32 for 285 yards, got McKinney on the board with an 89-yard touchdown pass to Matt Lipka, who had seven receptions for 151 yards.

J.J. Floyd scored on a 4-yard run for a 19-7 lead, but Lee scored once before the half and once after along with a 25-yard Michael Gonsalves field goal for a 23-19 advantage.

Damian Willis led the Lions with 124 yards on 20 carries.

Denison 56, Frisco Centennial 17

FRISCO– The Yellow Jacket threesome of D.J. Jones, Jordan Taylor and Jimmay Mundine made things miserable for the host Titans, as Denison (8-1, 6-0) set up quite an anticipated 111th Battle of the Ax.

Taylor completed 10 of 13 passes for 298 yards and five touchdowns, both school records. He threw four of them on Denison’s first five touchdowns and accounted for the other on a 10-yard touchdown run.

Mundine, who caught five passes for 191 yards, was the beneficiary of four of the scores from 60, 15, 71 and 37 yards out. Jones ran 16 times for 156 yards and a touchdown and also had a 57-yard touchdown reception, while Joseph Williams added 96 yards on 13 carries and a late touchdown run for the Jackets, who play at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Frisco against Richardson Pearce.

Zach McCown was 19 of 31 for 156 yards and a touchdown run, while Imoh Edouhoukwa ran 15 times for 112 yards and a 60-yard touchdown run for Frisco Centennial (2-7, 0-6), who plays Frisco this week at Pizza Hut Park in a game with two teams trying to avoid the 9-4A cellar.

Frisco Liberty 49, Frisco Wakeland 21

FRISCO– Brandon Brotzman won the matchup of quarterbacks, completing 22 of 32 passes for 269 yards and three touchdowns, including a 29-yarder to David Smith (8 catches, 103 yards).

Jay Ajayi’s touchdown run helped the Red Hawks (5-4, 4-2) eventually tie the game and ran 18 times for 92 yards and three touchdowns.

Malcolm Hill finished with 85 yards on 10 carries along with six receptions for 64 yards and a score.

Corvellas Cage added two receptions for 80 yards and a touchdown for Liberty, who has clinched either a Division I or Division II playoff berth. A win would clinch a berth against Rockwall-Heath, while a loss would create quite a scenario against state-ranked Highland Park.

Tyler Kirkindoll, who was 25 of 36 for 347 yards and three touchdowns, threw a pair of second-quarter scoring passes to Dallas Grier, who had three receptions for 115 yards.

David Robason was held to 50 yards on 14 carries but did help the Wolverines (6-3, 3-3) take a 21-14 lead on his 11-yard touchdown reception from Kirkindoll.

Liberty won with 35 unanswered points, including Vince Thompson’s 50-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Thursday night

McKinney North 21, Frisco 17

McKINNEY– Sometimes when you’re in a lengthy losing streak, it makes the barrier to victory even tougher, and such was the case for Frisco at Ron Poe Stadium.

Chase Rashbrook was 24 of 50 for 301 yards and two touchdowns, while Carlos Harris caught 13 passes for 146 yards and a score for the Raccoons (0-9, 0-6), but McKinney North (2-7, 2-4) erased a 17-point deficit by scoring the game’s final 21 points, including 14 in the decisive fourth quarter.

Devin Smith ran 13 times for 100 yards and a touchdown, and DeAnte Moore added 80 yards on 12 carries and two scores for the Bulldogs, who held Frisco to minus-12 yards rushing for its 20th straight loss.

McKinney North could be a spoiler this week, as a win at Frisco Independent School District Stadium this week against Frisco Wakeland combined with a McKinney loss to Frisco Liberty would create a three-way tie for fourth place.

Wins by the McKinney schools would eliminate Frisco Wakeland from the playoffs after a 5-0 start.

The Wolverines could still be sitting home if they win if McKinney wins, because although they won the head-to-head battle against the Lions, they would lose in a three-way deadlocked scenario.

Austin Laudenslager added 60 yards on 14 carries for the victorious Bulldogs.

District 10-3A

Paris 50, Bonham 6

PARIS– The host Wildcats showed early and often how their athleticism, speed and raw talent weren’t going to be stopped in the final high school game to be played at Noyes Stadium.

Corban Taylor completed 10 of 14 passes for 191 yards and two touchdowns, as the Wildcats (6-3, 4-0) set up another winner-take-all game for the district title this week against Van Alstyne.

Aaron Ethridge ran seven times for 73 yards and a touchdown, as seven different Paris players scored, including a pair of defenders on interceptions.

Gray, who had three receptions for 114 yards, caught a short pass from Taylor in the third quarter, made one move on his defender and ran 80 yards for a touchdown, and Tyrell Smith picked up a loose ball on a bad snap and added a two-point run for a 43-0 lead.

Taylor found Tavairus Williams in the corner of the end zone for a 17-yard touchdown pass to cap a 13-play drive. Chase Gregory added a late 30-yard touchdown run to avoid the shutout.

Ethridge scored on a 37-yard touchdown run two plays into the Wildcats’ opening possession. Taylor added a 1-yard scoring run, and Cory Battle returned an interception 87 yards for a score.

Smith ended an eight-play drive with a 1-yard touchdown run, and Equettis Jenkins made a leaping, one-handed grab of an under-thrown pass for a 40-yard interception return for a score.

Paris led 35-0 at the break, despite both teams having an identical 122 yards of total offense.

Van Alstyne 27, North Lamar 21

PARIS– North Lamar let a fourth-quarter lead slip away in the clash of the Panthers at R.L. Maddosx Stadium, as well as an opportunity to clinch the district’s Division I playoff spot and will now have to win this week on the road at Commerce to assure itself of a post-season berth.

Orion Thomas ran 24 times for 225 yards and three touchdowns, including the decisive two scores from 4 and 11 yards out for Van Alstyne (9-0, 4-0), who hosts co-leading Paris this week.

Ryan White completed eight of 19 passes for 146 yards and two first-half touchdowns, and Dakota Boles ran 28 times for 127 yards and a score for the Panthers (2-7, 2-2), who had a rare night with more passing yards than rushing.

Chris Burge threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Soloman Biscarro for a 7-6 lead after White found T.J. Shirley (three receptions, 87 yards) for a 26-yard score earlier in the first quarter.

North Lamar took a 12-6 halftime lead on White’s 10-yard touchdown pass to David Bozarth, who scored the game winner last week to help the team escape a loss on the road at Bonham.

Thomas ran 41 yards for a touchdown with just a little more than a minute gone in the third quarter for a two-point lead until Cody Daniel kicked the school’s first field goal in more than two years for a 15-14 lead.

Ethan Elliott returned a fumble 88 yards for a touchdown 1:10 into the fourth quarter to put North Lamar up by seven until Thomas put Van Alstyne on his shoulders for the victory.

Anna 14, Commerce 0

ANNA– Matt Williams ran 19 times for 58 yards and an 8-yard touchdown run for the Coyotes (3-6, 1-3), who posted the shutout, tripled their win output from last season and remained in the playoff picture.

Anna could create a wild and whacky three-way tie scenario with a victory at Bonham this week and North Lamar loss to Commerce.

It would give all three teams two victories in district play.

The Tigers (1-8, 1-3) will try to lick their wounds and could clinch the final playoff berth with a win and Anna loss. They certainly didn’t foresee a shutout loss at a struggling Anna team which hadn’t won a district game but would’ve had to win this week against North Lamar regardless, as a head-to-head victory by the Panthers would send them into the playoffs either way.

Tyler Elliott attempted only two passes, but completed one of them for a 40-yard touchdown to Mark Jackson.

Jurace Brown ran 21 times for 83 yards for Commerce, who was held to a meager 80 yards of total offense.

Paris and Van Alstyne square off this week for the district title, with the winner grabbing hold of the Division II top seed and the loser the No. 2 spot as long as North Lamar gets in to serve as the Division I representative.

It could very well be a repeat of last season’s bi-district round of Argyle-Paris, Celina-Van Alstyne and Prosper-North Lamar with all three 9-3A winning a year ago, including Division I state champion Prosper and Division II state runner-up Celina, which lost to Carthage in the final game played at the old Texas Stadium in Irving.

The Wildcats would bump up to Division I should their cross-town rivals fall short, with Van Alstyne automatically grabbing the top spot in Division II win or lose this week and either Anna or Commerce grabbing the No. 2 seed.

District 9-3A

Prosper 41, Sanger 21

SANGER– Juan Williams ran 19 times for 175 yards and three touchdowns, as the defending state-champion Eagles (8-1, 3-1) grabbed the Division I playoff berth for the second time in as many seasons.

Brett Thompson returned a punt 48 yards for a touchdown, and Brian Hardy threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Mario Edwards.

Dane Evans, who was 25 of 46 for 243 yards, threw two touchdowns to Brock Squier to pull the Indians within a touchdown, but Williams scored from 11 and 78 yards out for the Eagles.

Blake Owens added a 1-yard touchdown run, and Evans added his third touchdown of the game, a 10-yarder to Jay Cain.

Both teams played sloppily at various points throughout, as each had more than 100 yards worth of penalties.

Prosper awaits either North Lamar, who needs to win at Commerce this week to avoid a three-way tie in District 10-3A, or Paris, who would bump up to Division I should North Lamar fall short of the playoffs.

The Eagles defeated North Lamar in the bi-district round last year on their way to a state title.

Argyle 38, Gainesville 14

GAINESVILLE– Jake Sizelove had a touchdown run and reception, as five different Eagle players scored in the road victory at the final game played at Gainesville’s Leeper Stadium and will play Celina this week to decide seeding in the Division II playoffs.

Four Leopard turnovers resulted in 24 Argyle points, as Austin Aune threw for 77 yards and two touchdowns.

Gainesville was three points away from going undefeated in district after a 29-26 loss to Burkburnett, but the Leopards have found life tough in district play.

Scotty Seiber was back in action for the Eagles (9-0, 4-0), rushing nine times for 45 yards, and Chad Hedlund opened the game with a 40-yard field goal.

Aune and Sizelove scored from 17 and 44 yards out, as Argyle could face one of four District 10-3A teams in the first round depending on the outcomes of those three particular games Friday night.

Kielyn Lewis scored from 39 yards out for the Leopards (5-4, 1-3) and later added a 7-yard scoring run for the final margin.

The Gainesville quarterback finished with 115 yards on 20 carries.

Justin Griffin had a pair of touchdown runs, and Billy Feathers contributed scores on the ground and through the air.

Griffin led the Chaparrals with 64 yards on eight carries and scored on runs of 18 and eight yards.

Pilot Point 30, Callisburg 20

CALLISBURG– Jarman Johnson scored on a 13-yard run to allow the seventh-ranked Bearcats to hold off upset-minded Callisburg.

Johnson ran 23 times for 151 yards and two touchdowns for Pilot Point (9-0, 4-0), who is the district’s Division II representative for the second time in as many season’s after last year’s run to the state semifinals against Muleshoe.

Quarterbacks Bobby Dorman and Seth Tilley swapped touchdowns, and Tilley threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to back-up quarterback J.P. Price.

Dorman answered with an 81-yard punt return for a touchdown to tie the game 14-14 after the first quarter but couldn’t get on track in the passing game with only 78 yards and three interceptions.

Johnson’s 28-yard touchdown run and sophomore Manuel Martinez’s 32-yard field goal put the Bearcats up by 10 at the half, and the lead remained until the final 12 minutes after a scoreless third quarter.

Langston Jones returned a fumble 80 yards for a touchdown to pull the Wildcats within four, but Pilot Point eventually pulled away.

Callisburg advanced to the playoffs as the district’s No. 2 seed in Division II despite losing the game.

Leonard 14, Howe 12

HOWE– The visiting Tigers found a way to win on the road despite going scoreless in the second half, but it doesn’t matter, as the program is making its first post-season appearance in 11 years.

Reggie Robinson ran 25 times for 89 yards, and Will Cowan added 56 yards on 15 carries and both touchdowns for Leonard (7-2, 4-2), which had its eventual game-winning touchdown set up by a Christian Vaughn interception.

Leonard had what it thought was going to be a tough road game this week at Honey Grove to decide the third-place team in district, but the Warriors’ loss to Whitewright allowed the Tigers to celebrate a week early.

One piece of potentially disturbing news was the loss of Cowan to an injury, and his status won’t be known until the middle of this week.

Howe took an early 6-0 first-quarter lead on Chase Fountaine’s 8-yard touchdown pass to Alex Torres, and the Bulldogs had a chance to win despite being held to minus-18 yards rushing.

Cowan responded from five yards out in the second quarter.

Fountaine completed 13 of 31 passes for 154 yards, but three drives proved costly after stalling on interceptions.

Robinson’s two-point run proved to be the difference in the game.

Cowan added a 7-yard scoring run before the half for a 14-6 advantage, as the Tigers finished with 199 yards rushing on 55 carries.

Tyler Ross’ two-yard touchdown run pulled the Bulldogs (4-5, 2-4) within two points, but the game finished with a scoreless fourth quarter.

Whitewright 6, Honey Grove 3

WHITEWRIGHT– Steven Spann played around two interceptions, completing 13 of 30 passes for 160 yards, and Chris Bearden intercepted Warrior quarterback Dillon Baugh in the final seconds to seal the win.

Tim Dilworth’s 32-yard field goal in the second quarter turned out to be the deciding factor for Whitewright (2-7, 2-4), which won for the second time in as many weeks after defeating Tom Bean on the road the previous Friday

Bearden finished with 94 yards on eight receptions, while Tyrone Swoopes added four catches for 50 yards.

All Honey Grove (3-6, 2-4) needed to do was to find a way to grab this win away from home and return to the friendly confines, where a win against Leonard would’ve pushed the Warriors into the playoffs.

The loss handed the Tigers the third and final playoff berth after their narrow 14-12 victory at Howe.

Whitewright had 182 total yards to Honey Groves’ 176, and the teams were neck and neck after a first quarter in which Aaron Spann and Dilworth exchanged field goals to provide a 3-3 deadlock.

Baugh did all he could, accounting for 100 yards of total offense (65 passing, 35 rushing) for the Warriors.

Zack Patt added 70 yards of his own (42 receiving, 28 rushing) but couldn’t help get the team’s rushing attack in gear.

Both teams had drives stall because of fumbles, and Honey Grove was unable to take advantage of a Courtland Finney interception.

GUNTER– Chad Tucker ran 19 times for 263 yards and five straight touchdowns stretching from the first to third quarters, as the Tigers, the Division I representative in District 11-2A, won their home finale and has one game remaining at Whitewright before a bi-district game against Hooks.

Tucker scored on runs increasing in distance throughout of 3, 4, 6, 59 and 61 yards. Nicky Mixon ran seven times for 64 yards, and Richie Robledo added 59 yards on 15 carries for Gunter (9-0, 6-0).

Dalton Lee added a 34-yard field goal for the Tigers, who finished with 431 yards on 51 carries in the victory.

Gunter had 480 yards of total offense to 86 for the Tomcats (1-8, 0-6), who were held to five rushing yards on 22 carries.

Two Tiger teams square off this week, with Gunter traveling to Whitewright in a game featuring teams with a combined 11 straight victories.

Tom Bean, which advanced to the bi-district round of the playoffs in 2008 before losing to Omaha Paul Pewitt in the first round in Greenville, tries to end its 2009 season on a high note with a home game against Bells, which surrendered a 13-point halftime lead in a road loss at Melissa.

Eddington ran 16 times for 212 yards, and Glover added 136 yards on 11 carries for Chisum (6-3, 3-3), which just missed a shutout after Rebel quarterback Brady Kennedy found Seton Hawkins for a 2-yard touchdown pass.

Glover and Eddington each had first-quarter touchdown runs, and Eddington threw a 9-yard scoring toss to Brian Millsap for a 21-0 halftime lead.

The defense not only kept the Rebels scoreless for more than three quarters and held them to 204 yards, it also found the end zone in the third quarter after Kolton Porter returned a fumble 68 yards for a score.

Glover and Eddington added their second touchdown runs from 20 and 61 yards out, respectively.

Kennedy completed seven of 22 passes for 90 yards, as the Rebels gave up 408 yards of total offense.

The Rebel quarterback was also the team’s leading rusher after finishing with 86 yards on 20 carries.

Chisum looks to finish on a high note next week against Redwater even though seven wins wouldn’t be enough to extend the season.

PATTONVILLE - Randal Sessums ran 29 times for 220 yards and a touchdown, while Payne Schuelke made the most of his five carries with a pair of touchdowns, as the Patriots (9-0, 6-0) set up a matchup of district unbeatens against Paul Pewitt in this final week of the regular season for the second time in as many years.

The teams fought through a scoreless third quarter, with Schuelke scoring his second touchdown from a yard out, and Tanner Connot adding his second of three successful two-point conversions for a 24-7 advantage.

Aaron Doddy threw his second of two touchdowns, a 21-yarder to Deonte Henderson, to bring the Hornets within 11 points.

Josh Esch, one of three Patriots floating around the 30-yard rushing mark along with Schuelke and Connot, added an insurance touchdown from 20 yards out for the final margin.

Hooks (4-5, 4-2) took a 7-0 first-quarter lead on Doddy’s 65-yard touchdown pass to Kendrick Henderson, but Sessums and Schuelke responded with 10-yard scoring runs for a 16-7 Prairiland lead it extended to 17 in the fourth quarter.

The Patriots almost doubled Hooks’ output with 356 yards of total offense to the Hornets’ 182, as Doddy finished with 109 yards passing.

Schuelke also had an interception for the Patriots, who will play Leonard Nov. 14 at a time and place to be determined.
